Computex: ASUS ultramobile Eee PC

Darius Chang  |  Jun 05, 2007

At the annual Computex event kicking off today in Taiwan, ASUS has introduced an ultramobile device designed to keep the user connected wherever he may be.

Like the Fujitsu LifeBook FMV-U, the ASUS Eee PC runs off an Intel Mobile processor and is fully compatible with Windows and Linux. Named after the ideals of easy to learn, work, play; excellent Internet experience and excellent mobile computing experience, the Eee PC sacrifices raw power to keep its form factor at a handy 225 x 165 x 35mm, while weighing only 890g. The unit is also fully connected, with access to both wired and wireless networks though its modem, Ethernet port, 802.11b/g and Bluetooth radios.

Nice touches include the use of a solid-state harddisk that is resistant to shock and drops. Sitting on the hinge just under the 7-inch display is an integrated Webcam for video conferencing. This convertible mini-notebook can be used in the Easy mode for quick navigation or switching into the more familiar desktop interface.

Sony to launch FZ and TZ series in Asia

Darius Chang  |  Jun 05, 2007

Expect some serious gear envy in June as Sony will be introducing two new lines, the TZ and FZ series, with some surprises in store.

The FZ notebook may seem to be a update of its mainstream FE series, but Crave UK mentions that the top-end configuration comes with a Blu-ray drive option, making it the most portable way to carry a next-generation optical drive. Its entertainment roots are evident with a transflective 15.4-inch widescreen and HDMI port. Based on the Santa Rosa platform, we expect it to make quick work of any multimedia tasks.

But if portability is important for you, the 11.1-inch TZ laptop might appeal to you. Sharing the same genealogy as the ultralight TX series, Sony has somehow found space to fit in an optical drive in its exceptionally small chassis. Surprisingly, the TZ notebook is not based on the latest Santa Rosa platform, according to Crave UK. However, the unit does come with a fingerprint scanner and a new MacBook-style keyboard. A solid-state harddisk is also an option, though that choice might not be available to Asia-Pacific consumers.

New 13-inch Dell laptop leaked

Dan Ackerman  |  Jun 05, 2007

It's getting pretty hard to keep a secret these days, especially when it comes to laptops. Eagle-eyed bloggers already managed to rain on the Santa Rosa parade in early May, and we've since seen leaked laptops from Sony and Lenovo.

The latest unplanned product announcement comes from Dell, where Engadget has managed to get its hands on some promo literature for the upcoming Dell XPS m1330, a new 13-inch laptop. Purported highlights include:

  • 13.3-inch LED backlit screen
  • 32GB SSD hard drive
  • 3G radio
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi
  • HDMI output
  • Slot-loading DVD drive

  • The real highlight of the XPS m1330 is its small size, even for a 13-inch laptop. It weighs around 1.8kg and is super thin, going from 22.1mm in the front to 33.8mm in the rear. No pricing or availability info has been released (or leaked) yet, so stay tuned for more details on this impressive-looking system.

    Ultramobile PC claims 12-hour battery

    Mike Yamamoto  |  Jun 05, 2007

Some of us have never been huge fans of the so-called ultramobile PC (UMPC), but maybe that's because we have an aversion to gadgets with acronyms that sound like universities. Plus, there just seem to be so many reasons not to want them. However, a new offering from Korean computer maker Raon claims to have dispensed with one of those black marks: Battery power.

It's been christened the "Everun" because its batteries can last from 7 to 12 hours, according to the company, depending on whether it's running a standard or enhanced pack. And no, it doesn't weigh 10kg, either--in keeping within generally accepted UMPC heft and dimensions, it tips the scales at 400 to 450g while measuring 170.2 x 83.8mm and less than 25.4mm thick. Other specs include a 4.8-inch widescreen, an AMD LX900 600MHz processor and a 60GB hard drive.

Battery claims are notorious for being hyped, of course, so Raon's marketing literature must be viewed with the requisite skepticism. But no matter what, the company promises to keep a lid on the Everun's prices, estimating that they'll fall "in the US$600 to US$900 range". We still don't quite see where the UMPC fits in the evolutionary scale, but if prices keep coming down, it may be able to stave off extinction for a lot longer than we thought.

Lenovo adds more Santa Rosa systems

    Michelle Thatcher  |  Jun 01, 2007

Fast on the heels of the ThinkPad T61 and ThinkPad R61, Lenovo has announced six more laptops to make the switch to the new Centrino. First up, ultraportable ThinkPads: The new X61 Tablet and X61s include low-voltage Core 2 Duo L7300 and L7500 processors, while the X61 runs on normal-voltage Core 2 Duo T7100 and up. All three new models are built on the Centrino Pro platform, which means an 800MHz front-side bus, integrated Intel X3100 graphics, and 802.11n Wi-Fi, plus Intel Turbo Memory (code-named Robson) and Intel's Active Management Technology for remote maintenance tasks.

Also new with this X series update: Security features that include the option to disable all I/O ports (to prevent sensitive information being transferred to a thumbdrive, for example) and a new battery management program that lets users make micro adjustments to squeeze as much time as possible out of the battery. Lenovo is claiming battery life of up to 10 hours (X61 Tablet), 11 hours (X61) and 12 hours (X61s) with the optional extended battery. We've an X61s in our Lab now, so we expect to know very soon whether the company's claims bear out. Starting price for the X61 Tablet is S$3,699 (US$2,627.88); the X61 is S$2,999 (US$2,130.58); with the X61s price yet to be confirmed.

Elsewhere in the ThinkPad line, Lenovo has added a 15-inch widescreen version of the Santa Rosa-based ThinkPad R61.

Also announced today are two Lenovo 3000 models: The 12.1-inch V200 and the 14.1-inch N200, both of which offer Core 2 Duo T7100 processors on the Centrino Duo platform (meaning no Active Management Technology). The V200's price starts at S$1,999 (US$1,420.15), while the N200 kicks off at S$1,899 (US$1,349.10)--not bad for the latest Intel components.

All of these laptops will be available in June for Asia.
