MacBook gets hot Down Under

Darius Chang  |  Mar 13, 2007

A MacBook in Australia must have missed the memo by Apple that the latest battery recall was an issue of performance, not safety, as it burst into flames in the middle of the night.

According to Australia MacTalk forum, user mattyb's MacBook battery had a meltdown while charging in sleep mode. Before its flaming death, a hissing sound was heard and smoke started spewing from the notebook. According to the owner, even before the incident the portable's power cell was behaving strangely, having poor charge capacity with the battery symbol showing an X occasionally.

Fortunately for him, while the MacBook was still under warranty, Apple Australia compensated his property damage and replaced his melted notebook with a more expensive MacBook Pro model. Investigations are still ongoing with regards to this issue.

Sony's fusion PC

Darius Chang  |  Mar 01, 2007

Is it a desktop? Is it a notebook? The Sony VAIO VGC-LA38G is a head scratcher as it has the profile of the former, but the battery pack and chipset of the latter. Best of all, it's finally in Singapore.

Sony has been strangely quiet about its new VAIO L series. After a long hiatus, it may again be taking on the desktop market with this fusion PC. It has probably one of the most innovative design for a PC in this region. From its flip-down keyboard complete with integrated audio controls and touchpad, to the LCD TV-style flat-panel speakers and glass frame, the VAIO L is all about sleek simplicity.

Following in the footsteps of the iMac, this VAIO is based on the mobile Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card. The 15.4-inch display has a glass frame reminiscent of the Sony Bravia LCD TV with an integrated VGA Webcam. Despite being ungainly at 4.5kg, those with exceptional arm strength might be able to take the VAIO L on the road as it has a battery rated for up to 2 hours, complete with ExpressCard and PCMCIA slot for external connectivity. Though Japan currently has a 19-inch model as well as an assortment of colors for the VAIO L, the model available in this region comes only in silver with a 15.4-inch panel.

Priced at S$3,099 (US$2,208.00) for a Singapore retail unit, it is a little costly for a laptop and very expensive for a desktop. But with its unique design, who can really put a price on style after all?
