With greater pressure put on mobiles to perform as entertainment machines, multimedia-focused AMD Live platform will be moving into your notebooks soon.
Competing directly with Intel's Viiv branding, AMD Live Notebook PC is geared toward making your system perform up to party standards with a host of proprietary video- and audio-streaming software, collectively known as the AMD Entertainment Suite. Unlike Viiv, which requires three system components to conform to Intel's standards, the AMD Live platform needs just an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, 1GB memory and Windows Vista OS with the aforementioned AMD Entertainment Suite. Vendors such as Fujitsu and MSI should be churning out AMD Live Notebook PCs later this month.
Hot on the heels of HP's tx1000us Vista-powered tablet PC comes Toshiba's Portege R400 tablet PC with a stylish white body.
The Portege R400 is a 12.1-inch convertible laptop with ultra-low voltage Core Duo processors. Unique to the system is a small LED display on the front edge that shows the time, battery level, wireless signal strength and email message status. Admittedly, it is not as exciting as the slideshow screen in the ASUS W5Fe.
The Portege R400 should be launched on January 30 in the US with a starting price of US$2,500.
Taking advantage of new tablet-focused features in the upcoming Windows Vista OS, HP makes it easy to work and play on its latest tx1000us tablet PC.
Being one of the first Vista-powered tablet PCs to be announced, the tx1000us is a convertible laptop with an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, 2GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics card and a 120GB hard drive. The new OS also gives the tablet PC additional functionality like Pen Flicks (quick shortcuts you activate with a swipe of the stylus) and enhanced support for touch-sensitive screens which do not require a dedicated stylus for input.
However, the tx1000us is not all work and no play. Included in the package are media control buttons, dual headphone jacks and a tiny credit card-size remote control which hides in the PC card slot when not in use. With a starting price of US$1,299 (S$1,999.55), it will launch in the US on February 28. The availability and prices for the Asia-Pacific market, however, have yet to be announced.
