Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010 gets 3G upgrade

Darius Chang  |  Nov 28, 2006

From December 6, the Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010--one the the slimmest ultraportables in existence--becomes even more mobile as it gets upgraded with a High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) slot for 3G wireless broadband service.

Launched at the same time as Singapore M1's HSDPA broadband plan, the LifeBook should be able to hook onto the Internet wherever there is cellular coverage. However, note that the Q2010's 3G download speed peaks at 1,800kbps, which means it will not be able to maximize the high-end Broadband 3600 plan offered by M1.

The first wave of 3G-enabled LifeBook Q2010 will be sold during the upcoming SITEX show from November 30 to December 3, after which you will have to wait till December 6 to find it in Singapore retail stores. It goes for a cool S$5,888 (US$4,239.63), although units purchased between November 28 and December 24 will receive a S$1,000 (US$720.05) cash-back rebate to ease the strain on your wallet. Considering the older Q2010 without 3G capabilities costs the same as the new units and does not benefit from the rebate, Fujitsu is really pushing towards the freedom of wireless mobile broadband.

ThinkPad X60 goes into tablet mode

    Darius Chang  |  Nov 15, 2006

After much speculation and rumors, the ThinkPad X60 Tablet will finally be hitting stores come December, bringing with it a few unexpected surprises.

Besides promising the excellent battery life of its non-tablet sibling, the ThinkPad X60, the new tablet features dual-core technology in a 12.1-inch form factor. Appearing for the first time will be the dual touchscreen/digitizer display and active rotation features which may get consumers thinking "Now why didn't I miss them before"?

The accelerometer, used to park and protect the harddisk reader, is now used in another more user-friendly way. By detecting which direction the notebook is held, the screen automatically rotates to an upright orientation. The X60 Tablet's :CD panel has also its outdoor viewability increased.

Most tablet displays require the use of a digitizer stylus for onscreen navigation. However, the new ThinkPad Tablet can switch to a touchscreen mode that allows one to use finger tips or any other pointed object to move the cursor. This provides an additional input method for users.

The ThinkPad X60 Tablet will race out of the warehouse and into Asia-Pacific stores on December 17. Pricing will be announced at a later date.

    LG launches 10.6-inch ultraportable

    Darius Chang  |  Nov 14, 2006

Offering what could be the first 1kg notebook with the option for a discrete graphics card, LG redefines the concept of ultraportable computing.

According to Howard Lee, managing director for LG Electronics Singapore, the C1 and A1 Express Dual are the world’s first notebooks in the 1kg PC range to be equipped with a discrete graphic card. Indeed, the 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 chipset is rarely seen in 12.1-inch portables, making it even more spectacular considering that the new LG models have 10.6-inch screens. Though it may not be enough to handle high-end 3D games, it is certainly more than sufficient for video decoding and simple gaming.

Clad in a glossy piano black and glossy white chassis, the LG C1 Express is a convertible tablet version of the LG A1 Express. Slightly larger and heavier than the latter, it will cost S$3,999 (US$2,879.46) when it hits the stores in mid-November. The price and availability of the LG A1 Express will be released at a later date.

Sell your Porsche, buy a notebook

    Darius Chang  |  Nov 13, 2006

Do you have US$350,000 (S$544,460) burning a hole in your pocket and you just don't know how to spend it? Splurge it all on Ego's diamond-decorated notebook.

Just don't expect a speedy gonzales for your money. According to CNET US, it runs on a single-core AMD Turion processor. This 12.1-inch extravagance was designed by fashion designer Rodrigo Otazu who put 470 diamonds in tulip, heart and Otazu logo patterns. Lest one accuses the company of pandering only to the upmarket crowd, it also created the Tulip Ego which has the same handbag-shaped chassis with interchangeable skins made from various designer fabrics and finishes, but without the sparkles. This range costs a mere US$5,000 (S$7,778)--a price which should be just right should Denise Richards decide to throw more laptops out the window.
