In a pleasant Valentine's Day surprise, Apple upgraded the processor for their flagship dual-core MacBook Pro on its online store even before the first unit has shipped, without raising the price by a single cent.
The pioneer intel-based Apple notebook, two configurations of the MacBook Pro is offered through the online store for pre-order. Due for shipping this month, the baseline model has its processor beefed up from 1.67GHz to 1.83GHz while the high-end unit now sports a 2.0GHz chip. The other components remains unchanged.
As predicted, once Intel has put two cores in its processors with its latest Centrino platform, graphics cards will follow suit. WidowPC claims to be the first in the world to launch a dual-GPU notebook.
Based on Nvidia's SLI technology, two GeForce Go 7800 mobile GPUs will work with an AMD processor to deliver unprecedented video-rendering performance. Considering the monster 19-inch display and the unavoidable increase in heat signature, it may be as portable as the Samsung M70 notebook--which is to say not very mobile at all.
The choice to use an AMD processor may seem strange, especially since current AMD mobile chips are single core. Perhaps the reason could be that the laptop will be ready only after June 2006, the same time that dual-core AMD processors will hit retail stores. Moreover, the fact that WidowPC Web site has removed this entry suggests that the company may not be ready to launch this product anytime soon.
