Yahoo launches new PC-to-Phone service

Darius Chang  |  Dec 13, 2005

Unified messaging has taken another leap forward with Yahoo's announcement of its latest Yahoo Messenger with Voice 7.5 software. Featuring the new PC-to-Phone service, Yahoo Messenger users can hop from the Internet to the telecommunications grid using the Voice-over-IP (VOIP) protocol, and connect to any landline or mobile number.

From simple text messages during the modem era, instant messaging services have taken advantage of the large broadband penetration and gone on to include file, picture, video and even voice communication. However, once offline, there was no way for instant messages to reach the recipient.

“The Yahoo! Messenger with Voice environment is now a total integrated communications service that helps users stay in touch with friends, family and business acquaintances. In one easy-to-use environment, Yahoo! Messenger with Voice helps users stay connected. Consumers can choose how they want to connect with others -- whether it is through text messaging, email, mobile text messaging, PC to PC calling and now, PC to Phone calling,” says Reza Behnam, managing director for Yahoo Southeast Asia. Maxell focuses on holographic storage

Colin Barker, ZDNet UK  |  Dec 08, 2005

Information storage media company Maxell has said it will launch its first holographic storage products in September 2006. The first removable drive will have a capacity of 300GB and a throughput of 160mbps.

Holographic storage works by storing information using light-sensitive crystals. Because it uses the whole volume of the drive--whose prototype looks somewhat like a floppy disk--not just the surface, it's possible to store much more information than is possible on a DVD.

With a single holographic removable drive, or disk, able to store 1.6 million high-resolution color photos or more than 240 hours of TV broadcast, holographic storage is starting to draw the attention of many in the IT industry. Read more

CNET News.com  |  Dec 02, 2005

"Chic" was the word on Intel's lips this week as it showed off a new line of concept laptop PCs that the chipmaker believes brings a luxurious personal touch to mobile computing.

Acting some years after Apple Computer made the iMac and the iPod into fashion icons, Intel has decreed that the laptop does not have to be "confined to a world of monotone grays and blacks."

Now soft-skin laptop PCs are poised to break into the fashion spotlight, Intel claimed. The company has teamed up with Toray Ultrasuede, made up of self-described "leaders in technology and fashion," to come up with a selection of suede-covered laptops. Read more
