Vuzix Wrap 310 video eyewear disguised as sunglasses

Say goodbye to sci-fi video visors like the chunkers on Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. (Credit: Paramount Pictures)

Finally, here's a video visor that doesn't look like Geordi La Forge's occular wraparounds in Star Trek: The Next Generation. I like the TV franchise, but I certainly don't fancy looking like a dork. The recently announced Vuzix Wrap 310 attempts to put some chic back into the video eyewear category, which makes you wonder why no one thought to fashion their video visors as sunglasses at the very start. Doh!

For starters, there's a choice of lens colors for the fashionable crowd. Better yet, these can slip over prescription glasses just as well. Vuzix claims a revolutionary "see-thru" Quantum optics technology that doesn't block out the world around you, which is great since you don't want to stumble around half blind.

Bose unveils the SoundDock 10, a new premium iPod speaker system

David Carnoy  |  Sep 18, 2009

Small size, big sound: Bose's US$599 SoundDock 10. (Credit: Bose)

Bose has been busy the last few weeks. First, it announced its new QuietComfort 15 noise-canceling headphones. And now it's introduced another high-profile product with a double-digit model number, the SoundDock 10.

Bose says it's been working for several years on this new speaker system for the iPod and iPhone (yes, it has GSM shielding), and its goal was to build a product that delivered "audio performance previously attainable from a one-piece speaker system for iPod."

The SoundDock is bigger and more expensive (US$599) than previous SoundDock models, but it's still relatively compact, measuring 17 inches wide, 9 inches high, and 10 inches deep. The centerpiece of the unit is a hefty, custom subwoofer, and two Bose Twiddler transducers (no, that's not a new social-networking site, it's a combination of a high-frequency transducer and midrange driver).

Thanko's wee MP3 player

Juniper Foo  |  Sep 17, 2009

For some strange reason, this mini MP3 Micro Sport player from Japan's etailer Thanko calls to mind the ear that scientists attempted to grow out of a rat's back. Morbid visions aside, this device is more earpiece than music player, making it one of the tiniest and most compact digital audio players out there at 16 x 25 x 22mm.

The 8g MP3 Micro Sport is innocuous enough to look like a hearing aid once you plug in, so no one's the wiser if you're not paying attention at boring lectures or long speeches. Though at that size, don't expect any superb audio playback. Available in 2GB (4,980 yen, US$55) and 4GB (6,980 yen, US$77) flavors, controls are expectedly minimal, with two chiclet buttons visible from the pictures along one side. Playtime maxes out at 4 hours, though beyond that not much is mentioned on whether the battery is built-in or removable.

Does the iHome iP1 perform as good as it looks?

David Carnoy  |  Sep 17, 2009

(Credit: iHome)

We don't associate the iHome brand with "premium" audio and cutting-edge design, but the folks there are giving it their best shot with the 100-watt iP1, which has a new look for the company known for its budget iPod audio systems.

The first thing you notice about the iP1 is that it has a very distinct, industrial look. It's all black with translucent, dark tinted plastic on the front supporting two rather deep cylindrical speakers (they extend a little more than 6 inches out the back). Weighing 3.6kg, the system has some heft to it, but you can easily move it around the room, though it's a little awkward to carry.
