Put bounce in your ounce with an iPod scale

Do you love listening to music as much as you love to precisely measure cooking ingredients? Of course you don't. But that's not going to stop ADE Germany from slapping an iPod dock onto a kitchen scale early next year, with an expected asking price of US$103.

The scale, which is curiously dubbed "Rihanna", includes an LCD that measures 1.7 inches by less than an inch and an integrated iPod speaker that plays beneath the glass measuring area.

The scale itself handles loads of up to 11 pounds, graduated in .04-ounce steps. It cannot, however, distinguish between kush or schwagg.

PSP-ready Blu-ray digital copy

Philip Wong  |  Nov 20, 2009

We used to have digital copy compatible with iPods and Windows Mobile handhelds. Now, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is extending this option to copy a standard-definition version of the Blu-ray movie to PSP, too. Game portal Joystiq has published an online video to demonstrate the procedure via a PlayStation 3.

Is B&W's new Zeppelin Mini a performer?

David Carnoy  |  Nov 20, 2009

Back in 2007, Bowers & Wilkins brought out the uniquely styled Zeppelin iPod speaker, which we described in our review as being every bit as sophisticated as Apple's iconic player, with detailed sound that largely lived up to B&W's high-end reputation. That Zeppelin remains on the market, but now it's got a smaller, less expensive--and more subdued-looking--sibling called the Zeppelin Mini.

While the US$400 Mini is less determined to stick out, it's still a sleekly styled speaker with a swiveling, pedestal-like stand and a mirrored chrome top that's pitched at an angle and is slightly concave (yes, you'll end up having to wipe dust and fingerprints off it to keep it looking its shiny best). True to its Mini name, this is a compact iPod audio system, measuring 6.8 inches high by 12.5 inches wide by 4 inches deep. And while it's small, it does feel substantial when you pick it up, weighing 4.75 pounds.

Chinon's iPod speaker is a TV, too

David Carnoy  |  Nov 19, 2009

Chino's AVi has a 7-inch LCD and DTV tuner for US$199.99.

We've reviewed a portable DVD player with a built-in digital TV (DTV) tuner and Sony's LBT-LCD7Di Muteki Shelf System with integrated DVD player and LCD. But Chinon's US$200 AVi iPod dock is the first portable iPod speaker system we've seen that has both an integrated 7-inch LCD for showing iPod videos and a DTV tuner.

Chinon says the AVi is "designed for use at home or on the road" and it also is equipped with an FM radio and alarm clock, though no GSM-shielding for iPhones.

Sony launches three new stylish headphones

Kelvin Low  |  Nov 17, 2009

Sony announced the availability of three new earpad headphones, the MDR-370LP, MDR-570LP and MDR-770LP. While all three feature 30mm driver units, the 570LP is the only closed-back offering, while the other two are open-back. In theory, closed-back headphones are more taut-sounding, while open-back variants sound more airy.

The 370LP is the most striking with four bright colors on offer. The 570LP features swiveling ear cups for fold-flat storage. Not skimping on the looks department, the 770LP appears the sleekest of the lot since the ear cups are adjusted along the headband's length.

The MDR-370LP, MDR-570LP and MDR-770LP headphones are available at all Sony retailers for S$49 (US$35.28), S$68 (US$48.96) and S$89 (US$64.08) respectively. They will ship Asia-wide by end 2009.
