Zune-Xbox gaming device in the works?

The Zune rumor mill has been churning for a while, with leaks of an alleged ZuneHD and maybe even a Zune smartphone. The latest rumor gathering steam is sort a riff on previous rumors: Microsoft is developing a portable digital entertainment device that bridges the gap between the Zune and the Xbox 360.

Team Xbox, which ran a story back in January with a similar theme, is the site behind the gaming Zune rumor. Team Xbox's anonymous source had some juicy tidbits to throw out, saying the Microsoft handheld, which has been dubbed the xYz, will be "unlike anything on the market today" and that we should think in terms of a mashup between the Sony Mylo, the PSP, and the iPod touch. The source, Team Xbox says, wanted to make clear that device "lacks access to a phone network."

Looks matter. If you don't think so, maybe the new fourth-generation iPod nano isn't for you.

Radius Products unveiled its new TruTune earbuds Wednesday. The 'buds are designed specifically to match the fourth-generation iPod Nano and its nine different colors.

The earphones have Y-style cables and no extensions, giving them a lightweight feel. They also come with different sizes of silicone caps to fit any ear, big or small.

Portable-gaming recession-buster: The Retro Mini

Scott Stein  |  May 14, 2009

iPhone games have redefined the meaning of cheap--in ways both good and bad --but you still need to drop at least US$200 for an iPhone or iPod touch. For real portable retro gaming with street cred, may we suggest the Retro Mini Handheld, which for only US$49.99 plays old NES cartridges (once you've blown the dust out of them).

Considering NES carts can be had for pennies at thrift shops, this little beauty might be the best way to play games for next to nothing at all. Compare, for instance, the cost of a US$2.99 eBay copy of Metroid to a US$5 DSi download of WarioWare: Snapped. Which would you rather have? Of course, the cartridge is larger than the machine, but at least people will know what you're playing.

Muji's wall-mounted CD unit plays it minimalist cool

We don't get half as many dandy stuff from Muji in Singapore. So I'm not holding out for this zen-looking offering coming to our corner of the planet from the Japanese brand known for its understatedly cool products. The Muji Wall-Mounted CD Player takes notes from light fixtures and toys with pull-string switches, and hangs pretty on the wall, until you tug that power cord. That's when the nifty part begins as this music box starts spinning that CD disc like a Whirling Dervish. (If you can sit through the arty PR pitch, watch the player in action here).

Introducing DJ Hero (do we need another Hero?)

Scott Stein  |  May 13, 2009

No more Heroes. (Credit: Activision)

Forget new consoles: If game publishers got their wish, we'd stick with the system we have and just buy endless peripherals. Activision's latest announcement in its ever-growing Hero series is DJ Hero, a new game focusing on the joys of being a turntable-spinning club god.

While the idea could be pretty fun--in fact, Konami already semi-explored it in Beatmania--the new turntable accessory, while pretty, is yet another plastic device to tuck under the television and get dusty.
