CES to expand Apple section

Erica Ogg  |  May 22, 2009
The Consumer Electronics Association, which hosts CES in Las Vegas every year, said Thursday that the tradeshow will expand its Apple section from 4,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet.

It's called the iLounge Pavilion and will be an exhibition area for products related to the Mac, iPod, and iPhone. This year, for the first time, there will also be a section for applications for use on Apple products.

The original 4,000-square-foot space sold out within days of the announced availability to retailers, developers, and accessory makers looking to exhibit their wares and services, according to the CEA. That led to the decision to expand the floor space.

After Apple announced that the 2009 MacWorld Expo in January would be its last participation in the event, speculation arose that the company might choose to appear at CES--which is held around the same time--instead.

Newsmy XO's razor-thin 5.5mm PMP

Juniper Foo  |  May 22, 2009

A mirror that plays media, or a media player that doubles as a mirror? (Credit: Newsmy)

My handheld device doubles as an organizer and multimedia player, so there's no real desire to get myself a dedicated media player. However, just for the heck of it, because it's probably the skinniest portable media player we've come across, the Newsmy XO may compel me enough to part with some moolah for it.

At a blade-thin 5.5mm, this is surprisingly meaty in offering. It squeezes in a 1.5-inch color AMOLED display with pimped-up mirror finish, touch-sensitive buttons, 22GB of internal storage and an FM tuner and receiver. There's more. It also packs an e-book reader, picture browser, video recorder with built-in mic, and support for AVI, MP3, WMA, FLAC and APE.

Sony to launch music store for PSP?

Greg Sandoval  |  May 22, 2009
Sony has spoken with some of the major recording companies about providing music for the PlayStation Portable, music industry sources have told our sister site, CNET.com.

The sources said the talks are only preliminary and no deals have been struck. But it seems Sony is considering offering music on the PlayStation Network, the company's nascent multiplayer gaming and digital download service. Such a move could place the PSP in direct competition with other multi-use music players, most notably the iPhone.

Spokespeople from Sony and the big recording labels declined to comment for this story.

Told that Sony was interested in music for the PSP, Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, a financial services company, applauded the idea.

"This makes total sense that Sony would try to get content for the device," Pachter said. "If Sony is smart, it would manage it the same way iTunes has and be device-agnostic. Whatever you get on a Sony site should play on an iPod as well.

Wii adapter lets you BYO retro video game controller

Sure, we really liked the Nyko Wing Wireless Classic Controller for use with the Nintendo Wii, but if we could choose any controller to use with Virtual Console games, it would be the originals themselves.

Developer Komodo may have come up with a device that could pacify these desires. With the Retro Adapter (to be distributed by Innex), you'll be able to use original NES, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo 64 controllers with Wii Virtual Console games.

We first saw the Zen MX launched in Japan in early May. Now the flash-based media player is heading for Singapore, together with another member of the Zen family, the Mozaic EZ300.

The Zen MX aims to be a more affordable version of the Zen by offering fewer features. The Mozaic EZ300 sports similar functions as the previous Mozaic, but is priced lower than its older sibling by offering a smaller range of capacities comprising 4GB and 8GB, and only comes in black.
