Eastpak: Optical discs are totally the new MP3s

Justin Yu  |  Apr 15, 2009

Believe it or not, party photographs are good for something: The guys over at Coolcats spotted this Eastpak CD case in the wild, and it appears to be part of the company's product collaboration with Ed Banger Records, the French label behind recently popular acts Justice, Busy P., and SebastiAn.

The entire collection will drop this fall, but High Snobiety already gave us a look at some of the first pieces in the official collabo--a backpack and a few smaller luggage items that bear bright, colorful Ed Banger allover-print themes.

The CD case is a little strange to me, though... I actually had to look it up to grasp a full understanding of its functionality. Prior to being called analog MP3s, people apparently stored these physical objects in a big folder with the rest of their "CDs?" Across the sea, you've got Japanese luggage designer Head Porter killing it (per usual) with its iPhone cases, and Eastpak responds with its... CD case?

I guess we can look forward to Eastpak's new MiniDisc holders coming soon to a shop near you.

Sony patents PSP-controlled spy car

Juniper Foo  |  Apr 15, 2009

More goodies out of Sony's party bag of patents, this one involves a remote-controlled car that can be navigated using a PlayStation Portable. While this seems to be merely exchanging the remote for a PSP and goes where cell phones have since gone, it does add an interesting dimension--a large LCD screen. Which opens up possibilities such as spying on friends carrying out surveillance work via a Webcam you can mount on the car and letting it go places. Or even turning this idea into a patrolling security device for the home. The patent also states that this can be used for a racing game within "augmented reality zones" to spice up gameplay. Now all we need is a nitro-powered remote control car that drifts, and we have a winner.

Logitech's latest earbuds: Ultimate Ears 700

John P. Falcone  |  Apr 15, 2009

The Ultimate Ears 700 Noise-Isolating Earphones are the latest upscale earbuds to hit the market for your listening pleasure. What sets the new headset apart from previous Ultimate Ears models is that each bud includes two separate channels--one for high and midrange frequencies, the other for lows. (By comparison, the almost twice as expensive and considerably larger Shure SE530s cram three drivers into each earbud.) Other niceties included are five extra pairs of ear tips, so you can customize the fit to the size of your ear canal (small, medium, or large), as well as an airline attenuator (to tap down those stridently loud pilot announcements), and a pocket case to carry everything.

The Ultimate Ears 700s are currently available; list price is US$229, though early online pricing is running US$20 to US$30 higher. They'll compete with a long and growing list of great in-ear headphones, including models from Shure, Etymotic, Klipsch, Denon--and Ultimate Ears itself.

Share music on the go with iLuv's minispeaker

Enjoying music by yourself is good, but it's always better to share. You'll find it easy to share, even when on the go, with the new minispeaker from iLuv.

Small enough to fit in your palm, the iSP100 Mini Portable Stereo Speaker works with any MP3 player including iPhones and iPods.

This is a very simple device that has built-in speakers, volume control and a 3.5mm jack. The unit runs on three AAA batteries. All you need to do to use it is turn it on and connect the player.

The speaker also comes in different colors to fit your style, including including pink, purple, silver, and black. It also comes with a carrying pouch.

It costs US$35 (not including batteries). This is a high price for something you can use only occasionally. However, if you are looking for an ultrasmall speaker in pink, this seems one of a few available choices.

Samsung Pico Projector now available in Korea

Damian Koh  |  Apr 13, 2009

Announced at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the MBP200 Pico Projector is now in stores in Korea for approximately US$300. According to Samsung, the pocket-sized projector that doubles as a portable multimedia player will be available outside of Korea in the next quarter, though the Korean outfit wasn't specific on the markets where it will be launched.

It's probably not the kind of money most Earthlings would spend in an economic downturn. But for those willing to splurge, the MBP200 has a footprint of 107.3 x 48.8 x 19mm, weighs 160g, supports native PDF and Microsoft Office files and a host of other music and video formats. It also has a 2.2-inch QVGA LCD, 3.5mm audio jack, microSD expansion slot and HVGA (480 x 320-pixel) projection resolution.
