iBoo docking station cute, but not so spooky

I don't know about you, but this thing won't scare me.

Speakal, maker of the unbearably cute iPanda, has once again got (most of) us charmed with its new cute iPod docking station called iBoo.

The audio system comes in the shape of a friendly ghost with design elements that work in most settings: From the bedroom to the office to the kitchen. In addition, the iBoo's small footprint and light weight make it suitable for toting along on-the-go.

Philips plunks down two new MP3 players in E.U.

Donald Bell   |  Feb 20, 2009

The Philips GoGear Ariaz in all it's dull, inoffensive glory.

I thought Philips had finally turned a page last December, when its started giving its MP3 players actual names (not just model numbers) and broke away from its tired black MP3 player designs. Unfortunately, mediocrity has reared it's bland, shapeless head again, as Philips announced two new additions to its GoGear MP3 player line-up destined for Europe in April (no word on whether the US and Asia will be so blessed).

The GoGear Ariaz (shown here) is the more unique of the two MP3 players and includes touch-sensitive buttons, a rocker switch for scrolling through menus, a 2-inch screen, FM radio, FullSound audio enhancement, and MPEG-4 video support. The Ariaz will be offered in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities priced at 79 euros (US$100), 99 euros (US$125), and 129 euros (US$163).

Philips is also rolling out the GoGear Opus, which, aside from its 32GB capacity ceiling and smaller screen, just looks like a more fully-baked version of 2008's SA6185. The Opus comes in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities, priced at 99 euros (US$125), 147 euros (US$186) and 179 euros (US$226).

Eau De P.O.S.: A new hybrid fragrance by Calvin Klein

Justin Yu  |  Feb 20, 2009

Banking on the not-so-recent popularity of digital audio, opportunist Calvin Klein is kicking off his latest "We Are One" campaign with a commemorative bottle of the classic CK1 fragrance that features a removable speaker at its base.

Calvin Klein's been a fashion staple since 1968, but we're not sure how much experience the company has with high-end audio. If I had to guess, I'd put my paycheck on "absolutely none whatsoever," and if I'm right, the audio quality of the speaker is probably about as good as a front door intercom.

The 100mL bottle sells here for US$50 and includes the removable speaker base as well, but no word yet on how it'll attach to your device. Again, if pressed to guess, I'd go with "awkwardly dangling 1/8" plug." Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of CK1 (I wore it all throughout fifth grade--event had a T-shirt) but it's hard to feel classy while your bottle of cologne is screeching "Single Ladies" at you.

Smells like the future.

Nintendo confirms April 5 US launch for DSi

John P. Falcone  |  Feb 19, 2009

Nintendo on Wednesday confirmed that the DSi gaming handheld will retail for US$170 when it hits US shores on April 5. The official word from the company is in line with widespread rumors that cropped up last month.

The DSi will initially be available in blue and black models. Given Nintendo's track record, it's a sure bet that additional colors will eventually follow.

Already available in Japan (see photos here), the DSi is an evolutionary upgrade of the monstrously popular Nintendo DS Lite. The new model includes larger screens, two cameras, and an SD slot in place of the Game Boy cartridge slot found on current models. The expandable flash storage will dovetail with new DSi Shop, an online marketplace for downloadable games available via the unit's built-in Wi-Fi connection.

Ultimate Ears now in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan

Juniper Foo  |  Feb 18, 2009

The Super.fi series is targeted at a wide range of musical genres. (Credit: Logitech/Ultimate Ears)

I'm no fan of in-ear canalphones for two good reasons. They stopper up your hearing, which can be a bit isolating when you're commuting. And they don't plug in comfortably out of the package; fit being subjective as no one pair of ears are the same. But I do know of diehard fans who swear by Ultimate Ears (UE) and have long awaited its arrival in Asia.

The good news is that Logitech, having bought over the US company last August to get into the earbuds game, has brought all four series in to Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, with plans to roll UE out to other parts of Asia in the near future. The bad news is, if you're looking for UE's custom-molded Rolls Royce of earbuds, you won't get that here.

What you will get are universal-fit products at a price accessible to the average consumer. Available are: The top-range Triple.fi; Super.fi for varied musical genres; Metro.fi's wallet-friendly earphones; and LoudEnough for kiddos.
