If you're in the market for a high-end portable audio recorder, but don't have the ducats for something like the Sony PCM-D50, the Alesis ProTrack may be just the thing. The Alesis ProTrack was announced back in June for older generations of the iPod (fifth-generation video iPod or iPod nano generation two or three), but before it started shipping last month, it was updated to include support for the iPod touch and other recent iPod models.

Details on Cowon's new D2+ touchscreen MP3 player have been revealed on the Korean version of the company's Web site. As the name implies, the D2+ is an improvement on the company's relatively popular D2 MP3 player line, which made its debut in February of 2007.

Details on the pricing of the D2+ are unclear, but the company product page explicitly touts new features such as BBE+ sound enhancement (recently included on the Cowon S9), a refreshed graphic user interface, and memory expansion compatible with SD, SDHC, and MMC. Existing Cowon D2 features such as FM radio, a 2.5-inch screen, voice/line recording, video playback, photo viewer, 50+ hours of battery life, text reader, and widgets, are all still here. Supported audio formats include MP3, WMA (including DRM), Ogg, FLAC, and WAV.

Xbox Live players get revenge by booting others off

Elinor Mills  |  Feb 23, 2009

Updated 4:30 p.m. PST with latest Microsoft comment.

Some Xbox Live players are finding that winning has its drawbacks.

Microsoft said it is investigating reports that people are using malicious software to disrupt Xbox Live players' Internet connections in malicious attacks.

"In our continued effort to help provide a safer and more secure experience for our community of more than 17 million members, we are investigating reports of a malicious Web site that attempts to lure Xbox Live members into providing personal information," Microsoft said in a statement last Friday.

"Phishing is an unfortunate and common threat on the Internet, and this problem is not related to the Xbox Live service," the statement said. "We encourage people to only do business with trusted Web sites and never enter personal information on unfamiliar sites."

Malicious software is being used by attackers to do things like temporarily shut down a game player's console or even an entire game with a denial-of-service attack targeting the IP address, according to Chris Boyd, director of malware research at Facetime Communications, the BBC News reported last Friday.

Sophisticated hackers are selling their Xbox Live attack services to others via the Internet underground for as little as $20, the report said.

Gaming preview: Who should buy the Nintendo DSi and who shouldn't

Jeff Bakalar  |  Feb 23, 2009

With estimated unit sales approaching 100 million worldwide, Nintendo has proven itself time and time again as the industry ruler of the portable console market. With the DSi--the second refresh of the Nintendo DS--we're starting to see the company move in an evolutionary direction with its flagship handheld.

The DSi takes with it most of the features the DS Lite had to offer, but adds new multimedia capabilities. The DSi has been on sale in Japan since November 1 of last year and has already sold well over an astonishing 1 million units. Now that Nintendo has announced that the DSi will go on sale April 5 in North America, it certainly leaves everyone asking one big question, "Should I buy one?"

New details on Metal Gear Solid 4 for iPhone

David Carnoy  |  Feb 23, 2009

(Credit: Konami)

If you haven't checked out Konami's Web site for Metal Gear Solid 4 Touch, the iPhone version of the popular MGS series, we recommend taking a look--even if you don't have an iPhone or iPod touch. Both site and game look pretty sweet, and Konami's posted new details with some Flash animation showing off the sniping and shooting controls. We also like the whole concept of cursor as giant finger.

The game is apparently sort of a rail-based shooter, and you use your finger to aim and tap the screen to shoot. To zoom in and enter snipe mode, you pinch out (spread your fingers); to zoom out, you pinch in.
