Creative goes Mozaic with new Zen player

Reuben Lee  |  Jul 24, 2008

For the third week running, audio maker Creative has unveiled a new portable media device for its Zen player range. The latest offering, the Zen Mozaic, is apparently inspired by mosaic expressions. Unlike previous Zen models which typically come in simple one-tone hues, Creative breaks away from its conventional designs to give the Mozaic player a rather refreshing yet unique appearance.

The Mozaic will be available in vivid pink, chic black and cool silver, and will come in capacities ranging from 2GB to 16GB. As with most recent Creative portable players, it will also feature a built-in speaker, in addition to a 1.8-inch LCD display, FM radio and voice recording (with onboard microphone). Creative gives a music play time of 32 hours before the next recharge.

According to Creative's press release, the 2GB (S$99 (US$71.28)) and 4GB (S$129 (US$92.89)) models are available now, while the 8GB (S$169 (US$121.69)) and 16GB (S$249 (US$179.29)) offerings will be launched in August. We are still waiting for Creative to revert on the availability of the Mozaic player in other parts of Asia.

The audio maker will also be introducing several accessories for the Mozaic, including the TravelSound Zen Mozaic speaker system (S$79 (US$56.88)), carabiner case (S$24 (US$17.28)), armband and skin (S$29 (US$20.88)) as well as silicone skin pack (S$24 (US$17.28)). The TravelSound speaker (as shown on the left) docks and charges the player, and comes with its own built-in rechargeable battery (for extended use) and FM radio antenna.

Update: Creative has confirmed that the Zen Mozaic will be available in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia, followed by other Asian countries in the next few months.

Cowon goes haptic with P5 video player

Donald Bell  |  Jul 24, 2008
Cowon has released photos and specs of a new portable video player dubbed the P5. As a successor to its Q5W mega-gadget released last year, the P5 adds a few new tricks to the Q5W's features and wraps it all up in a less intimidating design.

Offered in silver, red, and black, the Cowon P5 includes a 5-inch touchscreen with a 800 x 480 resolution and a new haptic feedback feature. In the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink tradition of the Q5W, the Cowon P5 includes stereo Bluetooth, FM radio, TV-output (component, composite, and S-video), stereo speakers, USB and USB host ports. Noticeably missing from the P5 is the Q5W's built-in Wi-Fi. However, Cowon's Korean Web site seems to imply that a USB Wi-Fi dongle can be added to enable Internet browsing.

Photos of rumored PSP-3000 surface

Jeff Bakalar  |  Jul 24, 2008
While Sony did not unveil any new hardware at the company's E3 press conference, new photos are beginning to show up around the Net that lead us to believe they're hard at work on an updated version of the PSP.

Kotaku reports that forums members from PSPChina BBS have captured the rumored PSP-3000, identified by its PlayStation logo button that would replace the Home button currently on the original and slim PSP models. The "new" PSP also features an onboard microphone located to the right of the volume controls.

While these photos certainly look convincing, we're still going to have to label them as rumors for now. We'll update you if Sony ever confirms their validity.

What would you want to see from the next PSP? Built-in flash memory? Larger battery life? Let us know in the comments section.

More pictures of the rumored PSP-3000 after the jump.

Apple getting ready for "product transition"

Tom Krazit  |  Jul 23, 2008
Let the guessing begin.

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer's decision to warn financial analysts Monday that Apple's fourth-quarter gross margins will be negatively impacted by a "product transition" should be enough to get the rumor wheels turning: Of course, it doesn't take all that much. The remark came within yet another Apple's earnings report that produced stellar numbers for the previous quarter but an outlook below what Wall Street had been expecting.

Oppenheimer deftly avoided several questions from analysts who tried to get a little more information on just what that "product transition" might involve. He used the exact same phrase last year in July during an earnings call to warn analysts of pretty much the exact same situation: that the transition would cause lower profits for the upcoming quarter. The result? New iMacs in August, and the iPod touch in September.

The incredible shrinking Lightsaber

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jul 23, 2008
The Lightsaber has always held a special place in this category, and a new product is paying homage to this totem once again in the form of a stylus for the Nintendo DS. (Make that styli, actually, because they're being sold in packs of two or three at a time.)

For those not in the know, according to OhGizmo, the trio-pack includes the Luke, Vader, and Obi-Wan sabers. And yes, they do light up, but don't expect them to retract. Remember, that's not real.
