iPod nano gets a new color

Reuben Lee  |  Jan 23, 2008
A new iPod nano color is in town and pink is the name. Introduced recently, the latest addition to Apple's iPod nano family is seemingly timed to coincide with Valentine's Day which is less than a month away. It will be the sixth color available for the 8GB version of iPod nano. The 4GB model is currently still offered in silver only. And no, there will not be pink versions of the iPod shuffle or the iPod classic. For now.

What! No iPod touch upgrades for Asia?

Reuben Lee  |  Jan 21, 2008

Sometimes, it just sucks big-time. Being an iPod user in Asia, that is. Not only is there no iTunes Store here (except for Japan, Australia and New Zealand), now iPod touch owners like yours truly won't enjoy the software upgrade that Steve Jobs publicized at Macworld recently. The irony is that even if you're willing to cough up the US$19.95 needed to get those additional five apps, you can't. It's available only through iTunes.

So in short, there's really not much that hapless iPod touch owners in Asia can do to keep up with the Joneses across the pond.

What's even more frustrating? Those who've just purchased a touch can only gnash their teeth over the news that the new iPod touch players will come bundled with the software upgrade (and the five new apps), according to the Cupertino firm.

Come on, Apple! If you can install it on the new iPod touch, you can surely do something for early iPod touch owners like myself. (We are still waiting for Apple's response on whether users in Asia can actually send their touch down to the service center for a software upgrade, rather than through iTunes.)

Meanwhile, rant all you want about being left out of the upgrade right here.

Ouch! US$20 to upgrade your iPod touch

Reuben Lee  |  Jan 16, 2008

This really sucks. After plonking down S$498 for an 8GB iPod touch (or S$698 for the 16GB version), you'd think Apple would at least offer free software updates for a few simple applications. After all, iPhone users are getting their 1.1.3 software update at no charge, following Steve Job's keynote speech at Macworld 2008 last night.

Well, think again. The Cupertino-based company has announced that current iPod touch owners will have to pay about US$20 for the software upgrade which adds five new apps. They are Maps, Mail, Weather, Notes and Stocks, all of which are found on the iPhone. All newly purchased iPod touch players will, however, come preinstalled with the new apps at no additional cost.

With the new apps, the iPod touch will essentially have the same applications as the iPhone, sans the cellular capabilities. The Maps app on the iPod touch will, however, use only Wi-Fi (rather than Wi-Fi and cellular) for triangulation of a location. The touch update will also allow more customizations of the home screen such as reordering and adding icons, as well as enable the use of the iTunes movie rental feature (for regions with the iTunes service).

At press time, Apple Singapore was unable to confirm the software upgrade's availability in Asia or how much it would cost current touch users.

The free music revolution could start with Jook

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 15, 2008

It's near impossible to cover everything at CES, the annual Consumer Electronics Show that kicks off a brand new year with gadgets galore. Not unless you're sleepless in Las Vegas 24/7, grow eight legs and eight heads, and prowl the aisles like you would the nearby Premium Outlets for factory bargains. Then again, we've known some tech geeks to do just that.

However, at the Great Digital Experience, a preshow event held the night before the tradeshow opened, we got a peek at gaming peripheral maker Razer's subsidiary Jook. Its music solution, also called Jook, aims to bring music sharing into the realm of social networking. In short, Jook wants to turn any portable music player into a personal radio station enabling anyone, regardless of their player, to wirelessly transmit songs to people around them.

To effect that, the technology utilizes two parts...

iPod speakers made for snorkling

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jan 11, 2008

If you can't afford a media-laden ocean cruiser but still enjoy your music by (or in) the sea, here's a modest alternative.

Ego is coming out with a waterproof iPod case that, unlike countless other water-resistant models, includes a set of speakers that stays dry too. The "iceBar2" is an updated version of a case introduced last year to fit the latest Nano.

And unlike speakers that are meant for bathroom dwellers and the like, this one and its shatterproof polycarbonate case can be submerged in up to 3m of water, according to Coolest-Gadgets, which also says it's bulletproof--a feature that might save your precious iPod when you get sick of hearing the same playlist.
