Aerielle intros i2i Stream

Donald Bell  |  Dec 21, 2007

Aerielle Inc., the company responsible for engineering FM transmitters for Kensington, iRiver, and SanDisk, is launching its own wireless music-sharing device called the i2i Stream Digital Music Broadcaster. The i2i Stream allows you to take any music source (MP3 player, home stereo, computer) and broadcast it between two or more i2i Stream devices. The technology takes advantage of the wireless 2.4 GHz frequency range, circumventing the need for Bluetooth compatibility, and offering a range of 10m. Each i2i Stream also comes with its own independent volume control and a USB-rechargeable battery capable of 7 hours of playback.

Ultimately, a product like the i2i Stream is attempting to take the mess out of sharing one audio source (probably an iPod) among many users. We remember seeing a similarly-priced product called SnoopTunes try this same concept earlier in the year, but with limited distribution and a toy-like production quality. Hopefully, a larger company like Aerielle will have the muscle to make a product like this stick.

The i2i Stream will be available online (with international shipping) in pairs for US$129, or individually for US$69.

An unexpected convergence device: The lantern

Mike Yamamoto  |  Dec 09, 2007

Technology may be making everyday objects smarter all the time, but one of the least likely examples has come in form of something that practically defines low tech: The camping lantern.

The "Intelligent Lantern" would come in handy for emergencies as well as outdoors recreation because it includes a digital clock, built-in speakers, and an AM/FM radio with local NOAA weatherband, as well as a hookup for an MP3 player. And unlike other combo devices we've seen, it doesn't abandon its primary mission: Its lights can be seen as far as a mile away and has "dual articulating lanterns" that can be positioned as needed. If it only had a color LCD, we'd be sold.

Bluetooth headset gets touchy

Mike Yamamoto  |  Dec 07, 2007

When we saw a touchscreen recently on an external hard drive, we knew there'd be no stopping the touch revolution. The latest category to succumb to the trend is the Bluetooth headset.

Developed for mobile phones and PDAs, the Genius BT-031 has a built-in touch-sensitive panel and slide control to adjust volume, according to Gizmag, as well as a wireless range of up to 30.

We appreciate the efforts of Genius, which is always trying something different, but we often find ourselves dubious about some of its achievements. (Witness the solar-powered keyboard, hybrid speaker-camera, and combo mouse VoIP phone.) And here again, we're not so sure about these headphones: We have a hard time imagining a touch slide that's easy to use for something as sensitive as volume--they might blow out our eardrums with one false move.

Some speakers are still firing on all cylinders

Mike Yamamoto  |  Dec 06, 2007

For a while there we thought the trend of portable cylindrical speakers, which seemed so hot at times this year, had been snuffed out by more beastly competitors. But apparently they're alive and well, as evidenced by this set--they've just been broken in two.

Depending on how much space you have, this compact set can either be kept intact in one piece or separated for wider stereo angles for any device with a 3.5mm jack. What we like most, however, is that it seems perfect for travel: The pieces have a scratch-resistant rubber (and dirt-hiding) black rubber shell, and at a combined length of 5 inches they can be stowed just about anywhere. And they sure beat a pair of ugly tin cans.

Altec Lansing aims headphones at Upgraders

Reuben Lee  |  Dec 06, 2007
It's a fact that most portable audio and video players come bundled with average, if not, crappy earphones. The sad part is most people don't seem bothered by the poor sound quality. Some aren't even aware of it. For those who do, here's an option for you.

Altec Lansing claims its Upgrader series of headphones targets music listeners dissatisfied with the earbuds included with their players and are looking to "upgrade" to better sound quality. To cater to different user preferences, the Upgrader series is split into three main categories: inEar, onEar and overEar.

The inEar offerings (UHP306, S$199; UHP336, S$299; UHP101, S$69 and UHP301, S$109) feature the SnugFit design that Altec Lansing claims can reduce ambient noise and deliver high-fidelity audio. Active lifestyle users who want to enjoy their music while remaining vigilant of their surrounding environment can opt for the onEar headsets, the UHP303 (S$179) with neckband, the UHP307 (S$89) earclips and the UHP304 headphones. For those who prefer over-the ear head cans, the overEar offerings come in a choice of SRS surround sound (UHP405) and active noise cancellation (UHP805).

The Upgrader series is notable for its interesting use of materials inspired by sporting goods and eyewear. For example, titanium makes up the neckband of the UHP303 and the headband for the UHP304. Memory foam is used in the UHP101 for better ear fit, while silicone is deployed in the UHP303 for a gentler soft fit. The headband for the UHP405 and UHP805 is made of an unbreakable material called Lexan, and a microfiber material called Spasoft is found in several of the headsets for improved moisture absorption.

All Upgrader headsets are now in stores except for the UHP405 and UHP805 which are expected January next year. (Top right image: UHP303; Bottom right image: UHP101)
