Fashionable headphones for urban warfare

Tim Moynihan  |  Nov 16, 2007
These headphones can beat up your iPod earbuds.

The Skullcandy G.I. headphones are the first we've seen with built-in bullet holders in the headband, as well as a zip-up pouch that holds what looks like a bottle opener. (Update: According to Skullcandy, the tool included in the pouch is a screwdriver/skate tool/bottle-opener combo.)

Available in four styles--Rasta, Desert, Camo, and CCore (pictured here)--the CCore models look like the ones to buy if you want the fewest number of people getting all up in your face and/or messing with your biz.

The ear cans cost US$69.99, but the Skullcandy site says they're out of stock until at least the beginning of December.

A skater/snowboarder-friendly retailer, Skullcandy also sells a line of MP3-playing watches, accessories, and backpacks. The company also sells lower-profile earbuds, but that means you'll have to carry your bullets and bottle opener around in your pocket. Laaaaaaame.

Apple patches image buffer overflow in iPhone, iPod touch

Robert Vamosi  |  Nov 15, 2007

Apple on Monday released a patch for the iPhone and iPod touch. The TIFF vulnerabilities associated with the patch are serious. However, in fixing the security flaws, users will no longer be able to apply Jailbreak, a software that allows for third-party applications on the iPhone. Further, Apple says the update is only available through iTunes, and will not appear in the Mac OS software update application, or on the Apple downloads site, and requires the latest version of iTunes to receive this update.

Image IO
This patch affects users of iPhone v1.0 through v1.1.1, iPod touch v1.1, and v1.1.1 and does not not affect Mac OS X v10.3.9 systems with Security Update 2006-004, Mac OS X v10.4.7 systems with Security Update 2006-004, or systems running Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later. The patch addresses vulnerabilities found in CVE-2006-3459, CVE-2006-3461, CVE-2006-3462, and CVE-2006-3465. According to Apple, "Image IO contains a version of libtiff that is vulnerable to multiple buffer overflows. By enticing a user to view a maliciously crafted TIFF image, an attacker may cause an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issues by performing additional validation of TIFF images."

Apple credits Tavis Ormandy of Google's security team for reporting this vulnerability.

Designer stereo bed massages too

Mike Yamamoto  |  Nov 15, 2007

Now this is a marked improvement in design over the last MP3 bed we encountered, unfortunately from afar. Then again, that shouldn't be particularly surprising given that this model is from a company based in the aesthetically conscious Netherlands.

The "Music Power Bed from Holland's Gravity Zero has a 150-watt sound system built into its attached headboard, but that's just the beginning. It also comes with "two sleep system motors, two massage systems with 12 massage programs, Talalay Latex mattress, matched pillows, and pneumatic hand control," according to Uber-Review.

But before you throw out that futon you've had since college, check out the prices: The bed is part of a line that ranges from US$10,000 to US$50,000.

iSkin Cerulean TX/RX: True wireless iPod speaker docking

Nate Lanxon  |  Nov 13, 2007

We love a good bit of wireless technology here at Crave. We're not convinced Wi-Fi will give you diseases, or that Bluetooth will actually give you blue teeth, so it's with a great deal of excitement that we tell you about iSkin's Cerulean TX/RX.

The Cerulean is an A2DP stereo Bluetooth 2.0 transmitter with a difference. Normally, you'd dock your iPod directly into a compatible speaker system and perhaps control it with a rubbish credit card-sized remote control. With this little gizmo, you connect a Bluetooth transmitter into the iPod's dock connector and connect a Bluetooth receiver to the dock connector of an iPod speaker system. And that's it! Wireless iPod connectivity with any iPod speakers.

You'll be able to use your 'Pod up to 10m away from the receiver. A special USB cable comes in the box so you can charge the player while it's connected to the transmitter, too. An extra 3.5mm jack-equipped transmitter lets you transmit audio from any source--game console, CD player, video camera--to the receiver. This requires a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cable that isn't included, but it's a handy bonus for anyone who wants to use this bit of kit with more than just iPods.

You can pick up the TX/RX now for about US$149.99.

Latest iPhone, touch update jailbroken before it hits the ground

Tom Krazit  |  Nov 12, 2007
Updated 4:20pm to include stats from German launch.

As expected, Apple released the OS X 1.1.2 update for the iPhone overnight to coincide with its debut in the UK and Germany. As not expected, it's been sprung from jail already.

Erica Sadun at The Unofficial Apple Weblog obtained jailbreaking code for the 1.1.2 update almost simultaneous with its release last night, and tests this morning confirm that it works for both the iPhone and the iPod touch. The 1.1.2 update patched a flaw in the way OS X handles TIFF image processing, which was the way hackers gained access to the iPhone after the 1.1.1 update, and it also wiped out third-party applications just like before.
