Is that a killer whale?

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 09, 2006

If cute could kill, this little sea-going mammal lookalike certainly has what it takes to rule the waves. We would like to think it can out flip 007 at Casino Royale with its plastic flippers.

Toshiba introduced this as an imaginary character which will eventually be associated with the Japanese manufacturer's line of mobile peripherals and accessories. According to a Toshiba spokesperson, the decision to use Pala-Chan in more markets came about after the company observed a 40 percent increase in tradeshow attendance when Pala-Chan was used as part of the booth's marketing collaterals.

Pala-Chan has a girlfriend named Papu-Chan which is colored pink. Joining the critter are its dad, mum and a friend. Names of these characters were not known at press time.

Pala-Chan will be available as a 1GB MP3 player with a USB jack. It can belt MP3 and WMA songs for 15 hours straight. S$179 (US$129.63) for this beached whale thingy.

iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED hits 8GB

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 06, 2006

Editors' note :
In response to overwhelming popularity, Apple is adding an 8GB version to the iPod nano (PRODUCT) Red Special Edition which will be retailing for US$249.

We doubt it's intended to be part of Apple's Yuletide retail campaign this year, but for the ailing millions in Africa, it may very well be. The benevolent new iPod owner will see part of his purchase cash (US$10 worth) channeled to a fund dedicated to purchasing anti-retroviral medicine for AIDS patients in Africa. The ruby-hued nano will be a purely cosmetic upgrade; there are no technical enhancements. Another fellow of the (PRODUCT) RED alumni includes the Motorola RAZR.

And unlike the previous Bono-blessed iPod U2, which came at a premium, the (PRODUCT) RED iPod will be priced exactly the same as its non-crimson brothers. No word on Asia availability.

iPod shuffle: Apple's tiniest doesn't inspire confidence

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 03, 2006

The next generation iPod shuffle finally gets reviewed. But it failed to impress. Audible background noise? That's so uncharacteristic of the iPod legacy. Better take a leaf out of Sony's new noise-canceling wonder to silence the critics. Though we would have to be the first to admit it's the sleekest MP3 player in its price range.

Creative banging hopes on Zen patent

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 02, 2006

In a report by Bloomberg News, Creative took a larger loss than expected after it was outsold 23 to one by Apple Computer's iPod against its MP3 players in the US.

While Creative has made peace with its chief competitor, it still has a bone to pick with other leading MP3 player manufacturers over licensing agreements and this may lead to new revenue streams for the Singapore-based company.

Along with the impending payout from Apple, Creative will no doubt be looking to the Christmas shopping season to boost its coffers.

Tivoli iYiYi: Say that again?

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 01, 2006

For a room clad in designer furnishings, it really needs a bedside radio that can cut it amongst the chic. The iYiYi has that all licked. Finished in shiny black and festooned with Tivoli's trademark knobs, it's a droolsome sight. We also dig the iPod dock and the remote which ensures we wouldn't have to roll over just to switch the dial. At S$599 (US$433.78), it certainly gives our piggy bank something to chew on.
