Apple may be working on hybrid iPhone for CDMA, GSM networks

Jon Skillings  |  Nov 09, 2009

There's long been speculation that US carrier Verizon would sooner or later be offering the Apple smartphone, which since its launch has been solely in the hands of AT&T in the United States. (In some other countries, Apple has deals with multiple carriers.)

The latest posting to suggest an imminent rapprochement between Verizon and the iPhone comes from the AppleInsider blog, which on Friday said that it's gotten wind of Apple having contracted to build a Verizon iPhone that would debut in the third quarter of 2010.

More broadly, according to AppleInsider, the new "hybrid iPhone" will work on both the GSM/UMTS and the CDMA systems, meaning Apple will be able "to sell a single global handset to all carriers, and specifically to Verizon Wireless in the US". In the US, carriers AT&T and T-Mobile are in the GSM/UMTS camp, while Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel are in the CDMA camp.

HTC's product excellence "tip jar"

John Chan  |  Nov 06, 2009

We pointed out recently that HTC changed its tagline from "HTC Innovation" to "quietly brilliant". What we did not know then was that it was part of a large marketing push which includes a few TV commercials with a focus on the word "You". The 30-second spot was quite well-executed, as you can see from the YouTube clip after the jump.

In 1963, car rental company Avis started using its "We try harder" slogan, which has become one of the most recognizable taglines in advertising history. Bill Bernbach, co-founder of DDB, the advertising agency that conceived the idea, recommended that Avis first improve its services, saying: "It's always a mistake to make good advertising for a bad product."

Almost 50 years on, this statement still makes a lot of sense. Now that HTC has a fancy advertising campaign, will it continue to have great products to back that up? Well, going by what we heard about its CEO Peter Chou in a recent interview, it seems like he's trying hard to make sure of it.

Hands-on video of the HTC HD2

John Chan  |  Nov 05, 2009

TAIWAN--We got a bit of air time with the HTC HD2, announced for Asia yesterday. The first thing you'll see in this video is how the ringtone volume decreases as the phone leaves the table when there's an incoming call. Though we didn't get an answer on why this was so, we reckon it's a nice touch to avoid jarring ringtones blasting into your ear. This Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone will be available at the end of November and we will have a full review as soon as we are able to get our hands on a commercial unit.

HTC still thinking about the Netbook segment

John Chan  |  Nov 05, 2009

HTC has dipped its toes in the Netbook category before with a wannabe minilaptop, the HTC Shift, which runs a full desktop version of Windows Vista. (Credit: HTC)

TAIWAN--In an interview yesterday during the HD2 launch, HTC CEO Peter Chou revealed that his company is still interested in the Netbook category of products. He said HTC was "carefully looking into that category and how it can be part of that". Chou further explained that it has not happened yet because he wants such a product from HTC to have "unique value", and not another "me-too" Netbook that would be similar to the many models out there.

Netbooks are scaled-down notebooks designed for portability and basic computing needs such as Web surfing and word processing. Most are sold by established notebook makers like HP and Asus. Mobile phone brand Nokia recently joined the fray with its Booklet 3G, adding both HSDPA connectivity and GPS navigation to differentiate it from the rest. Though not strictly classified as a Netbook, HTC has also dabbled in this category with the HTC Shift which runs a full desktop version of Windows Vista and is very portable at 800g.

Me: iPhone owner.
You: User of multiple cool, up-to-date gadgets. College degree not required.

Those lines weren't lifted from a Match.com ad, but they easily could be, if consumer electronics shopping site Retrevo is to be believed. As part of its ongoing Gadgetology study of people and electronics, the site surveyed 247 iPhone owners nationwide to find out what makes them tick. If you're infatuated with an iPhone owner, read on for tips; here's our interpretation of Retrevo's findings:
