According to Mopocket, Microsoft is working on an updated user interface for Windows Mobile (WM) 6.5 that will make it easier for manufacturers to implement capacitive touchscreens.
Capacitive screens require fingertip touches and are used in devices like the iPhone and most Android handsets. WM smartphones have always come with resistive displays which are best used with styli. The recently released HTC HD2 based on WM6.5 is the first to buck that trend with a capacitive screen. Here's an interesting bit of kit for the iPhone, the 4iThumbs overlay. Essentially a screen protector, the 4iThumbs has raised bumps that match each key on the iPhone's onscreen keyboard. Today, Nokia announced two new mobile phones, the 6700 slide and 7230. These may not be packed to the gills with features, but look to be nice additions to the company's midrange mobile phone portfolio that contributes greatly to its market leader position.
The 6700 classic was a very stylish mobile phone and the slide version looks to carry on that image in a different form factor. Features include an aluminum finish with a choice of six colors (pictured right), 3G connectivity and a 5-megapixel camera. Interestingly, though its design is a main pull factor like the classic, the 6700 slide is equipped with the S60 3rd edition smartphone operating system. This makes it suitable for those with more advanced needs.
The 7230 is another slider based on the lower-end S40 user interface. It also has 3G and a lower-resolution 3.2-megapixel camera. Expect both devices to reach Asia in Q1 2010. Prices have yet to be announced.
