Light up with this Lighter Phone

Juniper Foo  |  Jul 21, 2009

Now, here's something we've not seen before: A phone that doubles as a cigarette lighter. More tacky than techie, it's gimmicky enough in a made-in-China way to light some chain-smoking geek's fire. There's no price to this yet, and we reckon the Seabright SB6309 Lighter Phone works like a car lighter socket as it claims not to need gas.

Which is perhaps fortunate since you won't want this multitasking handset to blow up in your pocket. Oh yes, did we also mention that it's a multimedia phone with a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, a (so-so) 1.3-megapixel camera, MP3/MP4 media player, Bluetooth connectivity, FM radio and even dual SIM support? Now all that's needed to complete this picture is that it comes in a gold color.

Nokia Surge renamed as 6760 slide in Asia

Damian Koh  |  Jul 21, 2009

The Surge, originally an AT&T-branded handset in the US, is making its way to Asia this quarter as the 6760 slide. Targeted at users who are active on social networking portals, the S60 device comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 3.2-megapixel camera and a physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Wireless connectivity options are aplenty with quad-band GSM, 3.6Mbps HSDPA, Assisted-GPS and Bluetooth stereo A2DP, although Wi-Fi support is noticeably missing. Ovi Maps 3.0 is also preinstalled, along with instant messaging applications such as Ovi Chat, Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk. No word on pricing, yet, although the black 6760 slide will make it to market first, followed by red and white versions later in Q4.

Canned Motorola Ivory photographed

Russian site Mobile-review has photos and specs of a never-released Motorola phone dubbed Ivory. This premium handset is a slim slider developed in conjunction with the Aura, another luxury handset (reviewed here), and was supposed to come in steel, gold and platinum versions with its price running as high as tens of thousands of US dollars.

The Ivory seems longer than other slide-out phones and has a two-phase mechanism which first exposes the controls, followed by the numeric keypad upon further extension. According to the report, it was dropped because of lack of interest from operators. Unsurprising given the current economic climate.

At long last, Research In Motion is bringing its BlackBerry Desktop software to Mac OS X.

In a blog post on Monday, RIM announced that a version of its smartphones' desktop software will be released this September for Apple computers.

According to the smartphone maker, users will be able to sync their iTunes playlists, calendars, contacts, notes, and tasks from their Mac. They will also have the option of adding applications, updating the BlackBerry when new software is made available, and managing multiple handsets on their Apple computers.

Modu to be available in Southeast Asia later this year

It's been a year and a half since we first saw the Modu cell phone, but the company announced Sunday that its product will finally go on sale. Modu's home country of Israel will be the nation to launch Modu, with additional releases coming later this year in Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.

Starting Wednesday, Cellcom Israel will offer a limited quantity of Modu phones with a full release slated for later this year. The introductory Modu kit will be about US$125 (500 Israeli shekels).

Modu offers a unique product that combines a tiny cell phone with a selection of "jackets" that change the phone's appearance and feature set. It's an interesting concept and we're glad to see it finally seeing the light of day. Modu showed additional jackets last February at GSMA 2009 including a music jacket that features JBL speakers.

Modu is still working on a US launch, though nothing is planned as of now.
