BlackBerry social network from RIM imminent?

Marguerite Reardon  |  Jul 14, 2009

Research in Motion is about to launch a new social network for its BlackBerry App World store, according to a report from the blog TechCrunch.

The new site is called MyBlackBerry and it will allow device owners to create a social profile where they can share opinions and recommendations for their favorite applications and accessories, the story said. Users will also be able to share tips and tricks for using their devices.

TechCrunch claims that RIM will launch the new site on Tuesday. A source close to the company confirmed for CNET News that RIM is working on some kind of social networking site, but details of the site and when it will be launched weren't available. RIM declined to comment on the TechCrunch story.

Ever since the success of Apple's App Store, every other smartphone platform has either released or at least announced their versions. Singapore operator SingTel is getting into the game, too, through its upcoming App Zone service to be launched by the end of the year. Unlike other operating system-specific catalogs, SingTel's will cater to a wider range of devices, including regular feature phones with proprietary operating systems.

The App Zone will first be available only to SingTel customers and can be accessed through a desktop or mobile phone browser. The programs in this catalog will range from Java-based ones to full-fledged smartphone apps meant for Symbian, Windows Mobile or Android devices.

Latest Black Label LG demo video leaked?

John Chan  |  Jul 13, 2009

We've already seen the teaser for a new Black Label Chocolate phone from LG, but now it looks like everything's out in the open if this video is to be believed. The rendering shows a very long mobile phone with a 4-inch touchscreen display. Its features include HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and multitouch capabilities. This will be the fourth Black Label handset from the Korean company, and so far, it looks pretty impressive. The end of the video states that the phone will arrive in 2009, so let's wait and see if this one rumor turns out to be true.

Toshiba TG01 goes on sale in the UK

Flora Graham  |  Jul 13, 2009

(Credit: CNET UK)

We've been in a love/hate relationship with the Toshiba TG01 since Flora was called Andy and we laid eyes on it way back in February at the Mobile World Congress. Now that it's launched exclusively on Orange in the UK, we're still conflicted.

We love that it's the first smartphone to rock Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and we lust after its 4.1-inch screen, all packed into a case so slim it gave us body-image issues just looking at it.
