Goodbye Pre.

Oh dear. We can't say this was a complete surprise, but it looks like Apple made good on its earlier warning and put an end to the Palm Pre-iTunes synchronization with the release of iTunes 8.2.1.

In the release notes, Apple states that "iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices". Not wanting to believe the news, we bit the bullet and downloaded the latest version of Apple's music software to our PC and sure enough, the romance is dead.

Apple iPhone OS, SDK 3.1 beta 2 released

David Martin  |  Jul 15, 2009

Two weeks after iPhone OS 3.0's initial release, Apple posted new, beta 2 versions of the iPhone OS 3.1 firmware and the iPhone SDK 3.1 for developers. The OS 3.1 is available for all versions of the iPod touch and the iPhone, while the SDK 3.1 is available in versions that are compatible with Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Without seeing the update, we don't know which changes the beta brings, but we're hoping it contains bug fixes for problems we've covered here and here.

If you've seen and used this new update, please tell us about your experiences with it in the comments.

Updated: To reflect updated information about the iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 release.

Gizmodo reports that the new SDK will allow developers to connect their iPhones to a Mac running Xcode over Wi-Fi using Instruments for debugging. They point out this is useful whenever the dock connector needs to be used for another reason (Tethering? Development and testing of Tom Tom like hardware add-ons?).

TUAW reports that the tethering and MMS hacks we all enjoyed on iPhone OS 3.0 and 3.1 beta 1 no longer work under beta 2.

LG opens online Application Store in Australia and Singapore

Damian Koh  |  Jul 15, 2009

Right on cue. LG has opened the doors to its online Application Store in Australia and Singapore.

The Web-based portal will gradually be rolled out to 24 countries globally in 15 different languages. About 1,400 apps, from business to lifestyle and productivity, are available and the number is expected to grow to 2,000 by the end of this year.

Two LG Windows Mobile smartphones--GM730 and KS20--currently support the service, though the Korean chaebol expects to make it available for more devices in the future. GM730 users are able to download apps directly from their handset, while KS20 users are advised to download on the PC and then install it on the device. According to LG, over 100 programs are free for GM730 and KS20 users.

1.5 billion downloads from App Store in a year

Erica Ogg  |  Jul 15, 2009

While Apple still has a ways to go to be the dominant cell phone provider in the world, CEO Steve Jobs is comfortable with his lead in selling mobile applications.

Apple announced Tuesday that after a year in existence, its App Store has counted 1.5 billion downloaded applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. In a press release, Jobs said, "The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality. With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up."

Indeed, the rate at which customers are buying the apps seems to be increasing. In April, Apple announced 1 billion apps had been downloaded from its store, after just nine months of being open. Just three months later, another 500 million apps have been purchased. Apple says there are 65,000 apps available in the store, and 40 million iPhones and iPod touch devices sold thus far, with new iPhone 3GS owners likely bumping up those download numbers in the last month.

Apple acknowledges Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues with OS 3.0 software

David Martin  |  Jul 15, 2009
A rash of Wi-Fi connectivity and signal strength complaints have cropped up after Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 software update. Some users complain that their iPhones and iPod touches drop from Wi-Fi unexpectedly; others that they can't connect to the Internet at all.

Some users have been able to resolve connectivity problems by resetting their network connections (via Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings), but this simple fix hasn't worked for everyone. In some cases, not even a total system restore fixes the problem.

Apple has finally acknowledged the problem in a technical service bulletin titled "Unable to use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with iPhone or iPod touch because there's no address listed for the device." According to Apple, the problem happens during initial iPhone or iPod touch setup while performing an update or a restore with iTunes.
