Shots from the iPhone 3GS camera

Kent German  |  Jun 18, 2009

One of the new features on the iPhone 3GS is an upgraded camera with video recording. Not only did Apple increase the shooter's resolution to 3 megapixels, but also it added a nifty "Tap to Focus" feature. As you point the lens toward your subject and tap the display, the camera automatically focuses on that point and adjusts the white balance, color, contrast, and exposure accordingly.

In our tests, the Tap to Focus made a big difference, particularly with controlling the amount of light in a shot. Photos taken under most conditions were improved, but indoor shots without natural light looked about the same. Also, we didn't notice any change from the promised automatic macro setting. But enough of us talking; take a look at our iPhone 3GS camera gallery to judge for yourself.

Are UMPCs lost between Netbooks and smartphones?

Scott Stein  |  Jun 18, 2009

Viliv S5

Ultramobile PCs have always found themselves to be the tweeners of the mobile world: Too large to be easily pocket-size, yet too small to be usable as full-fledged computers. While the landscape just a few years ago was marked with products ranging from Samsung's Q1 to the OQO, often costing way too much money, now cheaper smartphones and Netbooks have crowded in on either side with portable power to spare.

Reported problems with iPhone OS 3.0 update are scattered

Erica Ogg  |  Jun 18, 2009

While the majority of commenters on CNET and around the Web are reporting success in downloading iPhone OS 3.0 when it launched June 17 (US time), there were scattered reports of problems.

My colleague Stephen Shankland, a CNET News reporter, tried several times to download the OS update around 12pm Pacific (8pm GMT) to his iPhone and received the same error message, pictured above, each time.

A handful of CNET commenters reported problems accessing iTunes. "I see that the upgrade is now available, but four times the message I get after a couple of minutes is that the download has 'timed out,'" said one reader, and another reported, "Same issue here, cannot connect to the iTunes store to activate so the phone won't work".

A guide to tether any iPhone without a jailbreak

David Martin  |  Jun 18, 2009

(Credit: Apple, Inc.)

During the WWDC keynote, AT&T was strangely absent from Apple's list of carriers that will support tethering in iPhone OS 3.0. AT&T has since explained that it will support tethering later this summer, but many iPhone users are champing at the bit for the added functionality. If you're one of the eager masses, use this how-to to enable tethering on any iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0--without jailbreaking--but only with a Mac.

Difficulty level: Medium

What you need:
>Mac OS X 10.5 or later
>Download this carrier settings file from gizmodo.com and double click it to mount it in Finder
>iPhone OS 3.0 (7A341) Gold Master final release for iPhone (see below note)
>First prerelease version of iTunes 8.2 (download link)
>Final release version of iTunes 8.2 (download link)

Age restriction warnings for several apps in iPhone OS 3.0

Nicole Lee  |  Jun 18, 2009
When I tried to update to the latest Shazam for iPhone after I installed iPhone OS 3.0, I saw this age warning popup window when the phone attempted to install the update:

I found this curious because a) I had already downloaded the application; this was just an update--if I was okay with the original application, shouldn't the update be kosher as well? And b) Shazam is perhaps no more "objectionable" than just turning on the radio; it's just telling you the song it thinks the source is playing.
