Toshiba's 1GHz smartphone now available in Japan

John Chan  |  Jun 23, 2009

The Toshiba TG01 was announced earlier this year as the first Windows Mobile device to sport a 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm. It was spied at various tradeshows but hasn't been commercially available anywhere, till now. DoCoMo is currently offering the smartphone as the T-01A in Japan.

Its specifications haven't changed much, including a 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480) screen, 9.9mm thickness and a weight of 130g. The custom interface with colorful vertical columns seems consistent with what we saw when it was originally announced, though surely the menus will all be in Japanese for this model.

It shouldn't take long for the TG01 to hit stores in Europe, too, as Toshiba had originally intended for a summer release there. Asia, on the other hand, is out of luck as the company still does not have any concrete details to share about its availability here.

OS 3.0 devoured 1.3 petabytes in downloads

Roughly 1.3 petabytes, or 1.3 million gigabytes. That's how much data the six million downloads of Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 has eaten through in less than a week since its public launch last Wednesday.

Editors' note:

This blog post originated from Crave UK. Click here to find out more about getting an iPhone 3G S in Asia.

OS 3.0 was a 230MB download from Apple's servers, and six million existing iPhone users downloaded it in five days. For reference, that's roughly the same as what the entire BBC iPlayer pumps out in the same period of time.

The activation, however, was plagued with problems. In fact it took us until almost midnight on the day of launch until Apple's activation servers would authenticate our installation. In the US, Apple is even offering iTunes Store credit to users who have experienced days of delays activating their iPhone 3G S.

But Apple would like you to know it's sold over a million of the new models since launch, and in the UK, O2 reported it had seen sales exceed what it saw for the iPhone 3G launch last year.

Most smartphones to get Flash Player 10 beta in October

Bonnie Cha  |  Jun 23, 2009

Back at GSMA 2009, Adobe announced that it would bring Flash Player 10 to a number of smartphones in 2010, and it looks like Adobe is making good on its promise.

In a Q2 audio press release, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed that Adobe will release a beta version of Flash Player 10 for a number of smartphone browsers, including Windows Mobile, Google Android, Palm WebOS, and Symbian devices, in October. In addition, Narayen said ARM, Nvidia, Broadcom, Intel, TI, and Qualcomm are currently optimizing the player for their products right now.

Apple's "Find my iPhone" can be thwarted

Josh Lowensohn  |  Jun 23, 2009

Apple's Find My iPhone feature is helpful, but can be thwarted by tech-savvy thieves.
(Credit: CNET)

Over the weekend, Livejournal blogger HappyWaffle (real name Kevin), posted a great story about how he purportedly used Apple's MobileMe service to track down his iPhone, which was stolen while he was at a bar. By using a laptop with a Sprint EVDO wireless data card, he and his friends figured out where it was and managed to get it back from the person who had taken it. They even used Google Translate to alert the thief (in multiple languages) that they would call the police if the device was not returned.

PhonePoint Pen lets you scribble in the air with your handset

Damian Koh  |  Jun 23, 2009

We knew that the built-in accelerometers in our phones can be used for more meaningful purposes other than just rotating screens and muting calls, but we didn't know exactly what they were previously. Now, a team of engineering students from the Systems Networking Research Group at Duke University has come up with an answer in the form of a prototype mobile phone app dubbed PhonePoint Pen.
