Apple could be providing a glimpse into some new features for future iPhones in a couple of patent applications the company recently filed.

The blog MacRumors.com reports that Apple has published two patent applications in the past few weeks that focus on features that incorporate motion and gesture user interfaces. One patent was published two weeks ago. And the other one was published Thursday.

HTC Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 details announced

John Chan  |  Apr 16, 2009

The Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 at HTC's launch event in Singapore.

HTC's new Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 smartphones were announced during the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona earlier this year. Those keen to buy one will be glad to know that the company has officially announced its availability in Asia Pacific. The Touch Diamond2 will hit shelves in mid-May at S$1,088, while the Touch Pro2 will roll out end-June retailing at S$1,328. The exact dates may vary depending on which country you reside in, so do contact your local HTC office for details.

Aside from larger WVGA displays, both devices also come with improved versions of HTC's TouchFlo 3D software. Some of these interface upgrades include large context menus for better fingertip operation and improved SMS and email handling. Click here for a quick look at some of these new TouchFlo 3D features.

We had a quick hands-on with the HTC Touch Pro2 and were pretty impressed with the build quality. The tilt screen from the TyTN II has made a comeback after skipping a generation in the HTC Touch Pro. The five-row QWERTY keypad is well-spaced out and after typing a few lines, we already like it more than the Pro's.

BlackBerry Storm making landfall in Singapore end-April

Damian Koh  |  Apr 16, 2009

If you've been holding out for the BlackBerry Storm with its clickable touchscreen, take solace in knowing that there's now a clearer indication on when your wait for the smartphone will end. That's end-April for those of you in Singapore and you can pre-order the handset from local telcos MobileOne, SingTel and StarHub. Pricing details were unavailable at the time of writing, but should be made know toward the end of the month.

As a prelude to today's launch, StarHub yesterday announced a new BlackBerry Premium data plan that comes with a monthly subscription of S$19.90 (US$14.14) and 1GB of free bundled data. There's a price cap of S$36.38 (US$25.85) regardless of the amount of data used locally and the plan will be launched on April 18.

The BlackBerry Storm is currently available in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand and will be announced for The Philippines next week.

iPhone Wi-Fi failures caused by battery heat?

David Martin  |  Apr 15, 2009
iPhone Atlas has already covered a number of complaints from iPhone users about iPhone OS 2.2.1. Frequently, faulty Wi-Fi connections were the source of these complaints. Recently, that problem has resurfaced, and one user is linking the Wi-Fi problems to heat generated by the iPhone and its battery.

A discussion in the Apple forum describes a problem in which some iPhones are randomly dropping Wi-Fi signals, then failing to reconnect to any network for a period of time.

Many people think the problem is caused by the iPhone overheating, and some go so far as to place their iPhone into a refrigerator to speed up the cooling process. (We don't suggest you do the same; refrigerating your iPhone could cause water damage and void your warranty.) We recommend letting the iPhone cool at room temperature for 30-60 minutes or until cool to the touch.

New swiveling Nokia on the cards?

Damian Koh  |  Apr 14, 2009

(Credit: The Boy Genius Report)

A tipster has apparently informed The Boy Genius that Nokia will be releasing a "swiveling E71-type handset" for Verizon in the US some time in July or August.

Now if you would excuse the accompanying mockup image which looks hideous unfinished, the concept is actually feasible. If the top rotates 180 degrees, the keyboard would end up below the display, similar to a conventional candybar QWERTY phone.

A pity that word is the device will be running on the S40 platform instead of the more established S60. Otherwise, the Finns could have planted a touchscreen panel on it.
