In defense of Sprint and the Palm Pre

Bonnie Cha  |  Apr 23, 2009

(Credit: Precentral.net via Engadget Mobile)

As you may have seen by now, Precentral.net got ahold of an internal memo from AT&T comparing its precious iPhone 3G to the Palm Pre, and not surprisingly, bashing the Pre as an inferior device.

Now, you know I've haven't been particular happy with Sprint or Palm about the way they're been handling the Pre, but I'm coming to their defense here and saying that this is just plain laughable. Let's take a closer look, shall we?

Sony Ericsson announces PlayNow plus in Singapore

Damian Koh  |  Apr 23, 2009

Update: SingTel has informed us that the retail price of the W705 Walkman bundled with the PlayNow plus service should be S$898. This article has been updated to reflect that.

There's nothing more thrilling than to have two phone manufacturers battling it out with similar offerings. Following Nokia's Comes With Music (CWM) launch in late February, Sony Ericsson today announced its unlimited music download dubbed "PlayNow plus" in Singapore.

The service, exclusive to local telco SingTel and introduced with the W705 Walkman, was launched in Q4 2008 with Telenor in Sweden and last month in Switzerland. Singapore is the first market in Asia Pacific to offer the service and Sony Ericsson plans to introduce PlayNow plus to another two undisclosed countries in the region.

The biggest difference between Comes With Music and PlayNow plus is that the latter is available only though a telco operator. To help you better understand the new service and how it compares with Comes With Music, we've compiled a handy guide in a table after the break.

Acer's upcoming smartphone lineup

John Chan  |  Apr 22, 2009

The upcoming Acer F1 smartphone.

Though the focus was on its series of Windows Mobile (WM) 6.1 handhelds today, Acer also took the opportunity to provide a teaser about its lineup for the second half of 2009. The four upcoming products are codenamed F1, L1, C1 and E1 and will all run on Microsoft's latest WM6.5 operating system.

The F1 will be launched in September this year. It comes with a 3.8-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen display, and according to earlier reports, uses the 800MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. A 1GHz version of that chip first came into prominence when Toshiba announced that it will power its upcoming TG01 smartphone. More details and pictures after the jump.

Facebook for BlackBerry 1.5 zips together contacts

Jessica Dolcourt  |  Apr 22, 2009

With products like the Outlook add-on Xobni relying on Facebook to give Outlook contacts a Facebook face to go with the name, it was only a matter of time before a mobile app started doing the same.

On Tuesday, RIM released the latest edition of Facebook for BlackBerry, version 1.5. In it, the BlackBerry-maker loads on new features to integrate your BlackBerry contact information with that contact's Facebook photo. If you choose, the app will update the existing photos in your BlackBerry contact list with your Facebook friends' profile photos, an association you can also create manually in Facebook, by clicking a friend's name. From that screen, you can request a friend's phone number, and view their BlackBerry contact information.

Bluetooth 3.0 devices expected in the next nine to 12 months

Damian Koh  |  Apr 22, 2009

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has given its nod to the Bluetooth 3.0 specification, a short-range wireless technology based on the current 2.1 EDR version with faster transfer speeds.

Here's how it works. Devices equipped with both Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi will be paired via the former, while data transfer is actually carried out via an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection. Benefits of this include throughput transfers of up to 24Mbps as well as better energy efficiency with a built-in power control mechanism.

The new standard will also be backward compatible and the Bluetooth SIG expects devices with the specification to be out in the next nine to 12 months.
