What's a day without a Palm Pre story, right? Uhh, right. The latest rumor making its way across the Internet tubes comes via SprintGurus, which says the Pre will launch on June 7 and not May 17 as originally thought.
This is based on an internal document posted by the owner of SprintGurus, who goes by "Coal", that shows all the devices that are in alpha/beta testing with Sprint. In the forum, Coal states, "For those asking about the Pre, there are 2 release windows, one is around 6/7/09--the other I cannot say much on." We're not entirely sure where the June 7 date came from as it's not listed on the document.
However, PreCentral.net seems to think the timing appears about right since it falls within the timeline of a viral video Palm may be working on for the Pre. The video will supposedly show a man refusing to leave his apartment until Palm releases the Pre, and in the casting ad for the video, the shoot dates are April 29 to June 5.
If the June 7 release date turns out to be true, the Palm Pre would make its debut just one day before the start of WWDC 2009 and presumably the introduction of a new iPhone. Is the tech world ready for this? Am I ready for this? *Gulp.*
One of the reasons someone may steer clear of HTC's Touch Diamond2 is the glossy back which attracts fingerprint smudges. There seems to be a way around this as an alternative battery cover with matte finish has been spotted.
Slashphone reports that it isn't available as a standard option in the Diamond2 retail package but can be purchased as an optional accessory for about US$35. The information and pictures first appeared in Taiwanese forum Mobile01, but it seems the photos have since been removed. That's a lot of money to pay for a thin piece of plastic. We have asked HTC regarding the availability of this accessory and are awaiting a response.
If we were to rank concepts that we hope to see in reality soon, this one by Chris Harrison and Scott Hudson at the Carnegie Mellon University would top the list easily. The graduate student and computer science professor pair have developed a proof-of-concept display that makes haptic and audio feedback on current touchscreen panels look like child's play.
The prototype is made from several layers of specially cut acrylic. These form an air-tight chamber that reacts either positively or negatively when the air pressure between them changes. This, in turn, creates bumps (buttons) and depressions on the top translucent latex layer. Read more »

Over the last few months rumors have continued to swirl around a possible Verizon-Apple deal to bring the iPhone to Verizon once Apple's exclusive pact with AT&T expires in 2010. But Tuesday BusinessWeek added a new twist to the rumor, reporting that Verizon and Apple are in talks to develop two new wireless devices that may hit the market this year.
Allegedly, one device would be a thinner, lighter, and lower-priced version of the iPhone--an iPhone Lite, if you will. While the other device would be something akin to the jumbo iPod touch that we wrote about previously. BusinessWeek's anonymous source describes it as a "media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos." Read more »
My previous outing with a Buddha phone wound up, well, lacking.
It seems like Engadget has spotted a more glamorous way to attain enlightenment. The Zen Mobile is said to be China's most expensive handcrafted clamshell with a rotary dial pad similar to the Bang & Olufsen Serene.
According to the limited literature, the Zen Mobile is made from high-quality jade with a 24K gold-plated ring set. Each phone will also come with a unique serial number, dock that resembles a lotus flower and equally tacky Bluetooth headset. No word on where it will be launched or how much it will cost you, but you'll probably have to make a trip to China, or perhaps in your afterlife, to pick up one of these.
