Does Apple have a video camera and faster 3G chip in mind for the next iPhone? (Credit: CNET)
Two reports involving a purported next-generation iPhone dovetailed quite nicely Friday.
First off, Silicon Alley Insider reported that it had heard a "rumor" that the next-generation iPhone--expected to launch around the middle of the year but unconfirmed by Apple--would come with faster networking chips. The tipster apparently wasn't clear on whether or not that meant an upgrade to 802.11n Wi-Fi or an upgraded 3G chipset meant to take advantage of faster 3G networks in testing by AT&T, according to Electronista.
But it makes sense viewed against another rumor floated by AppleInsider with a greater degree of certainty. The site said it had been told by a previously reliable source that Apple plans to introduce video recording on the next version of the iPhone, a capability that many iPhone customers have requested over the past two years.
With access to faster networking connections, iPhone owners could find it much easier to upload video shot from the phone to social-networking sites or to email it to friends. Engadget noticed earlier this week after examining the iPhone 3.0 beta that a "Publish Video" screen was visible in the MobileMe application. Read more »
For end-users, this means features which include system-wide search capabilities, cut, copy and paste, a landscape keyboard, multimedia messaging, stereo Bluetooth, in-app purchases, push notifications, real-time turn-by-turn GPS navigation, etc. Developers, on the other hand, are probably the ones who should be most excited about the updated operating system. The APIs will unlock certain features on the iPhone that were previously off limits and let them create new types of third-party apps while enhancing existing ones. Read more »
While not nearly as sexy as YouTube on the iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile users have reason to celebrate with a new version of the YouTube's mobile application (download and review). The company boasts that it's 90 percent faster than the previous version in terms of how quickly it starts up, pulls up search results, and when a video begins to play. It also detects what connection you're on and will serve up a quality that will stream in the fastest.
YouTube 2.2 plays videos in landscape and portrait modes on the Samsung Omnia.
In the demo video below, both the application and the selected video begin to play around a second after they're launched. That's a whole lot faster than the iPhone, especially the launch time, which should make clicking on YouTube links in emails and while browsing a less painful experience. While YouTube for Mobile is available globally, it's only localized for Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, and the US. Regardless, Nokia N95 owners should be pleased: Read more »
On Thursday, TomTom introduced a new plan for delivering map updates to its customers. Dubbed TomTom Map Update Service, the subscription-based service brings quarterly map updates for a one-time fee as low as US$39.80 or US$9.95 per map release.
The service is available starting today. If you subscribe, you will be alerted to new updates when you connect your GPS devices to your PC and the TomTom Home service (the company's free desktop software). From there, you'll be able to download the maps, which reflect all road changes that have been verified by TeleAtlas. The update includes whichever map or map set comes standard on the device. The iPhone Dev-Team says the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 can be jailbroken but issued a warning to some 3G users eager to get that shiny new copy-paste feature.
Apple unveiled on Tuesday some of what it says will be 100 new features coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch with the new version of the mobile operating system. A beta version was made available immediately to everyone in the iPhone Developer Program, and it didn't take long for developers to get cracking on iPhone OS 3.0.
The Dev-Team confirmed that the new version is "jailbreakable" on all devices in a blog posted Tuesday. But they said people who've already unlocked their 3G devices with Yellowsn0w will run into trouble if they download the 3.0 beta. Read more »
