ZTE debuts solar-powered phone

MWC 2009
Samsung and LG weren't the only companies showing solar-powered cell phones at the GSMA Mobile World Congress. On Wednesday, Chinese manufacturer ZTE launched a green model of its own. Created with Digicel and Intivation, the Coral-200-Solar is designed for emerging markets where electricity may not be readily available. And of course, it's Earth-friendly as well.

Exact feature details are sketchy at this point, but from what we can tell the phone won't offer a lot of goodies. Considering its target markets, the Coral-200-Solar is really about making calls. It should be available in June.

The candy-bar design is pretty plain and not nearly as appealing as the Samsung Blue Earth. On the front there's a display, a functional navigation array, and a keypad. Except for the solar panels on its rear face, the Coral-200-Solar largely resembles the ZTE C78 that's currently with MetroPCS. On a side note, a C78 is on my desk back in San Francisco awaiting a full review.

Ultimate Ears now in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan

I'm no fan of in-ear canalphones for two good reasons. They stopper up your hearing, which can be a bit isolating when you're commuting. And they don't plug in comfortably out of the package; fit being subjective as no one pair of ears are the same. But I do know of diehard fans who swear by Ultimate Ears (UE) and have long awaited its arrival in Asia.

The good news is that Logitech, having bought over the US company last August to get into the earbuds game, has brought all four series in to Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, with plans to roll UE out to other parts of Asia in the near future. The bad news is, if you're looking for UE's custom-molded Rolls Royce of earbuds, you won't get that here.

What you will get are universal-fit products at a price accessible to the average consumer. Available are: The top-range Triple.fi; Super.fi for varied musical genres; Metro.fi's wallet-friendly earphones; and LoudEnough for kiddos.

UMTS Palm Pre displayed at GSMA but not much else

MWC 2009

Once again, Palm had a presence at GMSA Mobile World Congress 2009, but unlike last year, the company's pavilion was buzzing with visitors and journalists from around the world trying to get a glimpse at...what else? The Palm Pre.

Disappointingly, Palm didn't make any major announcements at the show, namely a GSM version of the smartphone, but did have a bit of news. The company has joined Adobe's Open Screen Project and promised to bring Flash 10 Player to its WebOS devices by the end of the year. We asked Palm if it would be included on the Pre, and, unfortunately, it will not since the Pre is slated for release during the first half of 2009 and Flash 10 won't be available until the second half.

RIM, Lenovo sync up BlackBerrys, ThinkPads

MWC 2009
Lenovo and Research In Motion make different devices, but have one thing in common: Their target audience.

Seeing that, the Canadian smartphone maker and the Chinese PC vendor have teamed up on Constant Connect, a new service that will make it easier to link ThinkPads and BlackBerrys.

A PCI Express card, available from Lenovo for US$150, will enable emails from a user's BlackBerry to automatically sync to their ThinkPad's email program, whether that be Outlook, or a POP mail account. The key is that the ThinkPad doesn't have to be powered on for this to happen: It can be off, suspended, in hibernation, or on.

Alcatel-Lucent aims to lead 4G consortium

Colin Barker  |  Feb 18, 2009

MWC 2009

Alcatel-Lucent said on Monday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that it has joined with other companies to form a consortium to encourage the development of the next generation of wireless communications technology.

Called NG Connect--the "NG" stands for "next generation"--the consortium will bring together device manufacturers with content providers, application developers, and other interested parties, the Alcatel-Lucent said.

The consortium will be looking at different next-generation technologies, such as 4G, long-term evolution (LTE), and other ultra high-bandwidth technologies, Alcatel-Lucent said in a statement.

Other companies that have joined the consortium include Samsung, HP, Buzznet, Chumby, Connect2Media, Total Immersion, TuneWiki, and Words & Numbers.
