Video: Cute animals using Samsung phones

You've got to hand it to Samsung's marketing people. When it comes to selling stuff on the Internet, cute animals seem to work, and that's exactly what the company's loaded its latest viral vid with. It's several little fluffies taking part in day-to-day activities using the large screens of Samsung phones as support. They use them as a PC monitor, a movie screen, and even to play back an image of a romantic fireplace, though the inference of the one kitten making the sexy moves on the other kind of creeps me out. I'm not sure why.

Most iPhone applications gathering dust

iPhone users have very short attention spans.

Just 30 percent of people who buy an iPhone application actually use it the day after it was purchased, according to Pinch Media, which analyzed over 30 million downloads from Apple's App Store. And the numbers plunge from there: After 20 days, less than 5 percent of those who downloaded an application are actively using it. The drop-off is worse for free applications.

New details on Metal Gear Solid 4 for iPhone

If you haven't checked out Konami's Web site for Metal Gear Solid 4 Touch, the iPhone version of the popular MGS series, we recommend taking a look--even if you don't have an iPhone or iPod touch. Both site and game look pretty sweet, and Konami's posted new details with some Flash animation showing off the sniping and shooting controls. We also like the whole concept of cursor as giant finger.

The game is apparently sort of a rail-based shooter, and you use your finger to aim and tap the screen to shoot. To zoom in and enter snipe mode, you pinch out (spread your fingers); to zoom out, you pinch in.

iPhone Baby Cam app makes your baby smile...maybe

Part of the company's "sound camera" series of iPhone apps, Appliya's Baby Cam draws your baby's attention with a collection of 15 realistic sounds. You get everything from bells and a rattle to familiar melodies. Play the sound, hit the shutter. That'll be 99 cents, please?

This'll probably work well with pets, too, though the "Notes" section for the product listing in Apple's App Store warns: "Do not use this application with other creatures." Then again, it also warns:

Some babies might become upset, while others will get very excited at the sounds in this application. We advise you to first use the application at distance to see how the baby will react. We are not responsible for freak baby attacks.

There's a video on the Appliya Web site showing the app in action at a Tokyo daycare center. Needless to say, they don't show any "freak baby attacks".

Palm says game on for the Pre

Palm has confirmed that games will be among the applications available for the Palm Pre, although exactly what type of games will run on the handset remains unclear.

In an interview with Engadget, Palm said games will be part of the Pre experience, along with various other applications that will be offered through a Palm-style version of Apple's App Store. Mobile gaming is extremely popular on the iPhone and iPod Touch, and is a big part of Apple's pitch for those devices.
