Is there a crack in your Xperia?

Update: Sony Ericsson has informed us that there have been no reports of the mentioned cracks in Asia so far. The company says that any complaints will be assessed on a "case-by-case basis", which means someone will need to actually have this problem before we will find out how Sony Ericsson will react to it. Click here to read the X1's warranty terms (warning: PDF link).

According to a discussion at XDA Developers, some users are seeing cracks on their Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. These hairline fractures seem to develop around the stylus slot in the silver version and are occurring to sets bought in Europe. From the forum thread, those with black sets aren't getting the same problem and some are speculating that the reason for that is because the black version uses a different material around the stylus slot area.

Unexplained cracks in gadgets are not uncommon. Some might remember early batches of the Nintendo DS Lite also encountered such an issue on its screen hinge. Nintendo US repaired or replaced sets, but those not in the US may still be living with a cracked DS Lite. We have contacted Sony Ericsson regarding its replacement policy and are awaiting a response. In the meantime, go have a look at your X1 and see if you have such a problem. Let us know in the Talkback below.

LG watch phone enters HSDPA era

Darius Chang  |  Dec 29, 2008

CES
Step aside Dick Tracy. The first generation of watch phones were already quite impressive, managing to squeeze in mini-cameras and expansion slots into a form factor barely larger than a tea bag. LG's latest creation, the LG-GD910, ups the stakes by including a 3G HSDPA radio under the hood, giving it video call capability.

The 1.43-inch touchscreen might be a mite too small for a virtual number pad, but with text-to-speech and music playback features, this is an amazing piece of technology. We expect more details to emerge when CES 2009 rolls around, but in the meantime, we keep out fingers crossed that this watch will also be water-resistant as well.

Another rumored "iPhone nano" photo

Jonathan Skillings  |  Dec 24, 2008

Guess which one is the rumored iPhone nano?
(Credit: MacRumors.com)

With Macworld coming up in just two weeks, the parade of Apple-flavored rumors, wishes, and murmurings continues.

The latest to surface--or resurface--involves a purported concept photo of what's said to be an "iPhone nano," a more or less three-quarter-size version of the Apple iPhone. Even as it presents the photo, MacRumors.com also invokes a healthy dose of skepticism:

We have some serious doubts about the likelihood of such a device. These doubts are based both in the quality of the sources as well as the practicality of introducing a new form factor to the iPhone/iPod touch platform.

iPhone claims high-ranking spot on Flickr

Stephen Shankland  |  Dec 24, 2008

The iPhone has risen to prominence on Flickr, rivaling most SLRs in popularity. These statistics from Yahoo cover the last 12 months.

The iPhone is the mobile device of choice these days for doing most things that need a network. So it shouldn't be a surprise that the phone has carved out a prominent place on Yahoo's photo-sharing site, Flickr.

The Flickr Camera Finder, Yahoo's statistical counter of camera use among its members, shows that since the arrival of the iPhone 3G model earlier this year, the phone has vaulted not only over all other camera-phones, trouncing the Nokia N95 in second place, but also almost all ordinary cameras.

That's a notable accomplishment. I've been watching the Flickr Camera Finder for two years, and that's the first time I recall a camera-phone placing so highly. The top ranks have been dominated by SLRs, the camera of choice for many of Flickr's heaviest users.

Sex up your iPhone

Darius Chang  |  Dec 23, 2008

Apple app store may soon be undergoing a revolutionary change, if rumors by the developer of the Pull My Finger iPhone program is to be believed.

The current approval process for home-grown applications to get on Apple app store doesn't allow unsavory content to be uploaded and sold. The Pull My Finger app is an example. Slide upward on the virtual finger and the iPhone will emit a fart sound. Another program, iBoobs, brings new functionality to the accelerometer by allowing the user to shake virtual bosoms in almost any direction. Check out the video after the break.
