If you are wondering what phones will be like in the future, Wired's Gadget Lab has a great piece on the latest technology that could make its way to mobile devices soon. Some of these include phasing out the conventional 12-button keypad for a more intuitive touch user interface that will also respond to voice commands and hand gestures and improved voice recognition systems which are capable of "learning" and adapting itself to the individual's speech pattern. Interfaces like Swype will also change the way people type on touchscreen devices. We can also expect to see phone manufacturers really getting down to integrating various unique technologies to provide a more holistic user experience, though it may take time for all that to happen.
The Yubz telephone makes the argument that even iPhones can't escape irony's tacky, far-reaching arm. For US$50 and the cost of shipping from France, you can own this ridiculous handset that plugs into your iPhone and lets you pretend you're Donald Trump in the early 1970s.
It'll be out in mid-November on the Yubz Web site, but if you simply can't wait until they inevitably show up in your local mall's Spencer Gifts, they're also available for preorder.
Finally, if a solid gold telephone triggers your gag reflexes as much as it does mine, you can also opt to have your phone painted rose, rouge, jaune, noir, orange, or vert, according to the Web site. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go Google four out of six of those colors.
If you've been holding out for the iPhone 3G from Singapore telcos MobileOne (M1) and StarHub, it appears you might have to continue waiting, indefinitely.
According to an M1 spokesperson, there has been a change in the distribution schedule of the iPhone in Asia and that "is likely to affect M1's plans to sell the device by the end of the year".
StarHub, on the other hand, said talks with Apple are still ongoing and the company is confident it will eventually carry the iPhone. However, Apple was unable "to advise as to the exact date when the device can be made available to StarHub".
SingTel has also chimed in saying that it will be the only telco with the iPhone 3G this year in an email blast.
The Cupertino company hasn't issued any official statement.
Our take on the current situation is that Apple is looking to expand its distribution channels in countries which don't have the iPhone yet, before coming back places that already have it and opening it up to more carriers. Apple has always operated under a veil of secrecy, so there's no knowing when the other two telcos will carry the iPhone. The question is, are you willing to wait?
If you're lucky enough to own an iPhone or an iPod touch, you'll know there's loads of games available for them--but which ones are worth downloading? We've scoured Apple's app store and played many an awful game to bring you five of the best. Be warned: Some of these games are very addictive and you may find your battery life suffers as a side effect. Read more »
This just in, but not soon enough though. Sony Ericsson's second Wi-Fi-equipped music-phone, the W705 Walkman, and MBS-900 Bluetooth speaker are expected to be available only in Q1 next year.
Meanwhile, you can gloss over the specs of the Walkman which comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera, FM radio, 2.4-inch LCD, onboard motion sensor for automatic screen orientation, Wi-Fi, DLNA support and Bluetooth stereo A2DP for streaming music to what seems like the big daddy to the MBS-200 speaker ball--the MBS-900. The latter has a 2.1 audio system, built-in FM receiver, 3.5mm line-in function and support for both Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP profiles. There are also touch keys and a monochrome OLED display in case you prefer to switch tracks manually on the speaker.
