HTC's Touch HD and Touch 3G land in Singapore

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 06, 2008
Taiwanese handheld manufacturer HTC at a press event in Singapore today released the pricing and availability of its two latest devices--the Touch HD and the Touch 3G.

HTC Touch HD

Not surprisingly, the much-anticipated Touch HD, which is the new flagship model in HTC's lineup, will be priced at a premium S$1,388 (US$994.27). While this is slightly lower than what some people have speculated on earlier (at about S$1,500 (US$1,074.50)), the hefty price tag still makes it one of the most expensive PDA-phones in the market. However, those willing to pay the price will receive in return the best multimedia features one can possibly get in a PDA-phone today.

i-mate quells rumor of closure, hints at 2009 lineup

John Chan  |  Nov 05, 2008

According to a forum thread on popular mobile phone site HowardForums, i-mate, Velocity Mobile and MWg are "all no longer in business". This claim was made by a forum member who seems to be a reseller of mobile phones. The i-mate and MWg brands are familiar to us in Asia, while Velocity Mobile is a new company with strong backing from Inventec, a prominent ODM (original design manufacturer) based in Taiwan.

We contacted i-mate to ascertain these claims. Australia-based marketing manager Allison Caruk not only denied those rumors, but went on to tell us that the company will be announcing new products for 2009 soon. Caruk also added that Windows Mobile 6.1 updates for its current Ultimate series of PDA-phones are being tested and will be available for download soon.

The rumor could have been fueled by news of the company's CEO Jim Morrison saying in October that i-mate will delist from the London stock exchange. Reverting the company back to a privately owned organization will save i-mate money, one of the many steps which it has undertaken to cut costs since early this year.

CNET Asia also contacted MWg for its take on the rumor but have yet to obtain a response at press time.

Faced with a struggling economy, the best accessories in life are free

Justin Yu  |  Nov 05, 2008

Hands are totally overrated
(Credit: Jeff Staple)

I hate buying accessories for my iPhone; it's totally counter-intuitive. You're saying that I need to buy OTHER stuff to make the phone I just bought more useful? It doesn't make sense to me, and it doesn't make sense to Jeff Staple of Staple Design either.

Check out this iPhone/iPod Touch cradle he made out of a simple binder clip that (let's be real here) you can easily liberate from your company's supply closet! It might take a bit of tweaking with pliers to get the wire to stand up on its own, but I'd rather do-it-myself than give away more of my hard earned money! Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, don't get one, I'm about to make these by the dozen and and sell them all on eBay; watch the first ones go up tonight. How does US$10.99 + tax sound? Race you to the patent office!

Xperia X1 European shipments hit by delays--Asia unaffected

John Chan  |  Nov 05, 2008

According to a report by IDG News Service, Sony Ericsson isn't shipping as many units of the Xperia X1 as it had planned in certain European markets. The manufacturer's spokesman there attributed this to a lack of certain materials though he wasn't specific as to which ones they are.

The good news is, in the same report, plans to sell the X1 in Asian markets are not affected. We called Sony Ericsson to confirm this and were assured that this PDA-phone will still go on sale in November as originally intended. If you haven't already, read our full review of this handheld here.

iPhone or T-Mobile G1?

Kent German  |  Nov 05, 2008

HTC G1

I'm a month-to-month T-Mobile customer with a Nokia 6133 that is on its lest leg. I want to get a phone with a full Internet browser and I'm deciding between the iPhone and the T-Mobile G1. I'd also like access for my Yahoo mail, but I don't need my work email. Which do you recommend? Also, I don't own an iPod or use iTunes (I usually use Amazon to purchase music), so I'm concerned about moving to an all-iTunes environment.
- EJ

That's a a very good question, EJ, and the answer depends on your individual needs and desires. Though the iPhone is the better overall device (at least right now) a person in your situation should seriously consider the G1. Here is why.

I always tell people who are considering purchasing an iPhone 3G that there are three reasons to buy one. Forget the slick design and the flashy and user-friendly interface; I recommend buying the iPhone for its Web browser, its media player, and (to a somewhat lesser extent) its support for third-party applications. These three areas are where the iPhone performs very well, so I advise basing your decision on a comparison of those points. Sure, the design and interface are important, but I'd treat them and the email integration as secondary motivators. And of course, I wouldn't base my decision on call quality alone, as the iPhone 3G still suffers in that area.
