KDDI demos world's first 3D LCD display

Damian Koh  |  Oct 10, 2008
Good things come in pairs, but for Japanese telecommunications operator KDDI, the sum is greater than its parts. By using two LCDs to project images and videos separately for each eye, it has created what could be the world's first 3D LCD prototype display intended for mobile phones.

The 800 x 480-pixel screen on the right shows a fuzzy image, but according to Physorg, the stereoscopic effect is able to trick each eye into seeing a real 3D image. Naturally, there's no word on when you'll see this technology in the market, but at least you don't have to worry about making that happen since someone else is already doing it on your behalf.

Tap out your iPhone contacts with Thumbtacts

Bong Ngo  |  Oct 10, 2008

Out of the many features absent on the iPhone, I miss voice dialing and quick contact access the most.

With Windows Mobile smart phones, you can type on the keypad and then the contacts that contain the letters associated with the number will be shown. With the iPhone's built-in contacts, on the other hand, you have to either fumble through the alphabet or type the person's name in the search field, which you have to scroll all the way up to see.

I was very happy to run into Thumbtacts, a contact-management application from Kannuu. It's a simple application that at start-up displays four random letters in four buttons. You then can change these letters by tapping on the middle "More" button, or by tapping on one of the letter buttons to narrow down the contact names. If you keep tapping on the buttons that display the narrowed-down names, it will lead you to the person whose contact information you want to view. All in all, this requires quiet a bit of tapping, but at least it's much more convenient than the iPhone's built-in contacts.

Android phones making their way into the wild

Stephen Shankland  |  Oct 08, 2008

A Google employee surfs the Web with his Android phone.

Most of us will have to wait until October 22--or later, given that T-Mobile sold out--but if you have the right connections, you can get an Android phone now.

Google co-founder Larry Page flashed his Android phone briefly in a meeting two weeks ago with reporters, but they're trickling farther down the ranks at the Internet giant, too.

I snapped this shot of one Google employee surfing CNN.com with his Android phone while waiting for his chief executive, Eric Schimdt, to talk about energy at a San Francisco speech last week.

Android is the Linux-based open-source operating system Google created in partnership with several other companies. T-Mobile is selling the first Android-powered phones, the G1, but other manufacturers are expected to join in 2009.

BlackBerry Storm finally official

John Chan  |  Oct 08, 2008

RIM together with Vodafone have finally made the BlackBerry Storm official. A press release was sent out detailing the BlackBerry 9500 and 9530 devices, which are essentially the same. Except that the 9530 is meant for Verizon in the US and has a CDMA/EV-DO radio, while the 9500 is for the rest of the world with UMTS/GSM connectivity.

The main difference of the Storm compared with earlier BlackBerry models is the lack of any keypad, instead relying on a 480 x 360 touchscreen for input. It's not quite the same as what we are used to on products like the iPhone or HTC Touch Diamond. This screen depresses slightly when you click on something, making it somewhat like one huge button so you get tactile feedback when selecting items.

Other features of the Storm include a 3.2-megapixel camera, 3.5mm audio jack, GPS for navigation and a microSD slot which supports up to 16GB cards. The only glaring absence is Wi-Fi, so users will have to depend on HSDPA or EV-DO for high-speed data transfers.

We contacted BlackBerry to find out when we will get the Storm in Asia, but RIM only said it will "keep everyone posted when Vodafone releases further information about plans in specific countries". Let's hope that will be sooner rather than later. Vodafone will be giving details on availability and price in the coming weeks for Europe and the US.

Report: iPhone 2.2 getting Google's Street View

Tom Krazit  |  Oct 08, 2008

The Google Street View car was spotted in Singapore recently.

Maybe iPhone users won't have to covet one of those shiny new features in Google's Android operating system after all: Google Maps Street View.

The driver's-eye view is a prominent part of the first Android phone, T-Mobile's G1, which goes on sale October 22. But according to Mac Rumors on Monday, Apple has snuck Street View into the iPhone 2.2 firmware beta release.

Other new features described in the report include the ability to disable the typing autocorrect feature and the inclusion of 461 small icons called Japanese emoji characters.

The iPhone 2.2 firmware beta release is not expected until later this month.
