If talking over the phone is not enough (it's never enough for me, personally), you will probably soon have the option to place video calls, too. That is, of course, if your mobile phone supports VideoEngine Mobile platform Global IP Solutions (GIPS), the company that introduced the VoiceEngine for iPhone recently, announced on Monday.
The technology enables peer-to-peer video calling as well as multi-point video conferencing on mobile phones. GIPS says that its VideoEngine Mobile paves the way for wireless carriers, application developers and mobile handset manufacturers to provide high-quality video calls, even under adverse network conditions.
The VideoEngine works by implementing GIPS's existing industry standard real-time communications capabilities to leverage network effects and hardware limitations. This results in a better way to solve the most complex voice and video-related challenges in IP communications, such as packet loss and lip synchronization. Read more »
The Dubreq Stylophone, also known as "the original pocket electronic organ," was sold by the millions in the early '70s and used by artists including David Bowie, Brett Domino, Erasure, Hexstatic, Krafwerk, Marilyn Manson, Orbital, Pulp, The Raconteurs, and They Might Be Giants.
Now the VDSC is bringing the Stylophone into the 21st century. You'll be able to replicate the instrument's sound as well as other features by using the phone's touch screen. The app costs US$5.95 and will be available for download on December 1.
According to theunwired.net, HTC has released more Windows Mobile 6.1 updates for some PDA-phones in the Touch series. These are for the Touch Dual and Touch Cruise devices, both of which were not included in the original upgrade plan when WM6.1 was first launched.
WM6.1 doesn't significantly affect the operation of devices already running WM6, but it does offer some conveniences like threaded SMS and a setup wizard from the Today screen. We contacted HTC on the availability of this update in Asia Pacific. The company responded that there are upgrades forthcoming, but was unable to say which products and when customers will be able to download them. We'll update this blogpost as we get more information.
The Prada phone by LG has gotten itself a swanky silver QWERTY keyboard with a metallic feel. Along with it are enhanced features including video call capabilities, HSDPA, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi connectivity and a full HTML browser. According to LG, the new Prada mobile will be available in Asia by the end of this year. And if you are wondering how much it will cost you, just look to your European friends who will be getting theirs at about 600 euros.
The 5800 XpressMusic may have stolen the thunder for being the first S60 touchscreen handset, but it won't be in the limelight for too long. Devinder Kishore, director of Marketing for Nokia India, was quoted at a recent event in New Delhi saying that the Finnish company "will have a lot of touchscreen phones coming up, including an Nseries device very soon". The handset is expected to be announced this year and will hit markets in early 2009.
Sure, we knew it was coming, but we didn't know it would be that soon, considering a recent Reuters report that said the 5800 XpressMusic will miss the Christmas shopping season in most developed markets. According to Nokia, the touchscreen XpressMusic model will be available in Asia this quarter, beginning with Singapore and Indonesia. Seeing how things are shaping up, we're inclined to pass over the XpressMusic and wait for a swanky Nseries model instead.
