T-Mobile taking more pre-orders for sold-out G1

Bonnie Cha  |  Oct 06, 2008

If you've been sulking around the past few days after hearing that the T-Mobile G1 has already sold out through pre-sale orders, here's some news that might cheer you up.

T-Mobile announced Friday that it will continue to take pre-orders for the G1 through October 21, though the Google Android smart phone won't be delivered by the official October 22 launch date. Rather the carrier has a target delivery date of November 1. Here is the official statement from T-Mobile:

"Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our October 22 launch date, and have sold through them all. However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through October 21, for delivery at a later date. Also, people can still pre-register on the T-Mobile G1 Web site to be notified prior to launch where they can purchase the device beginning October 22. Details are available on the T-Mobile G1 Web site, www.T-MobileG1.com."

Storm from BlackBerry imminent

John Chan  |  Oct 06, 2008

With all the presentations, pictures and videos out there, you know BlackBerry's touchscreen phone has to be coming soon.

This is not going to end till the product gets officially launched, and the latest is that Boy Genius Report has gotten its hands on what looks like a full PowerPoint presentation of the BlackBerry Storm. The slides indicate that this device will come with features like a 480 x 360-pixel touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and image stabilization, GPS and options to type using both QWERTY and SureType (as seen on BlackBerry Pearl handsets) input methods.

It's important to note that this is a presentation for the Verizon BlackBerry 9530, an EV-DO device which is meant to work in the US. We'll have to wait and see if the GSM/UMTS version for Asia will have similar features.

500,000 G1 phones expected to sell in quarter

Marguerite Reardon  |  Oct 06, 2008

T-Mobile USA is expected to sell in the fourth quarter between 400,000 and 500,000 of the recently announced G1 phones, which use Google's Android operating system, according to Taiwanese news site CENS.

T-Mobile will also order up to 2 million of the devices from G1 handset maker HTC, the site said, quoting industry insiders. This could mean a big boost in revenue for HTC in the fourth quarter and into next year.

T-Mobile will launch the G1 on October 22 in the US for US$179. The new phone, which has a touch screen and GPS navigation, along with a rich software interface, has been compared to Apple's iPhone.

Even at the predicted sale rate of 500,000 units in the fourth quarter, the Android phone won't be selling as quickly as the first-generation iPhone. Apple shipped about a million iPhones during the quarter in which it first released the smart phone, in the summer of 2007. Still, 500,000 phones is nothing to sneeze at. And if the pace continues, Android developers will certainly have a big enough market to target with their new applications.

Flickr's iPhone-friendly (beta) redesign

Jessica Dolcourt  |  Oct 06, 2008
A great deal of Web companies have long since converted their iPhone-optimized sites into native iPhone apps, but not Yahoo's Flickr. Instead, Flickr is just getting around to tweaking its mobile site, m.flickr.com--in beta--specifically for iPhones. It may be behind the curve on iPhone-optimized viewing, but the results are crisp, streamlined, and satisfying nevertheless.

Flickr has made a big design effort to highlight activities you'll actually use and to make controls readily available. For instance, Flickr for iPhone puts your mobile email-upload address front and center, so you don't have to dig around to find it. Your comments, contacts, and activities are also given a share of the limelight with clear top-screen navigation, to much the same effect.

You'll also notice that photos are automatically scaled to fit the screen, though you won't be able to explore multiple photos sizes as you can from Flickr.com. We like that pages load without needing a complete Safari refresh, and that photo sets are more efficient to browse, thanks to the arrow-topped thumbnails of the next and previous photos that sit right next to the image and serve as back and forth controls.

Quickly scrolling through photo sets is as close as you'll get to slideshows and videos, however. Since iPhone 3G still doesn't support Flash, it is predictable (but nonetheless regrettable) that these features are missing. Despite that, Flickr's good-looking mobile site is one every Flickr user should bookmark.

Report: HP to market new smart phone to consumers

Leslie Katz  |  Oct 06, 2008

Aiming to push its hardware beyond the corporate world, Hewlett-Packard will release a new version of its iPaq smart phone that will also be marketed to consumers, The Wall Street Journal reports.

We don't have many details yet (iPaq App Store?), but the latest iPaq apparently will sport a touch-screen and keypad and will run on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, according to sources cited by the WSJ. The phone will likely hit Europe by the end of this year, with a broader release to follow.

Though definitely better known for its laptops and desktop PCs, HP isn't new to smart phones. The company has released several models in the past, including the HP iPaq hw6945 Mobile Messenger and the HP iPaq 510 Voice Messenger (the first Windows Mobile 6 smart phone). Both were geared mainly toward businesses, and both garnered their share of favorable reviews from users.
