Nokia Tube to debut at Remix event on October 3?

Damian Koh  |  Sep 24, 2008

Nokia Tube makes an appearance in the Dark Knight.

Engadget is reporting that an "anonymous industry source" has revealed that the XpressMusic 5800, otherwise referred to as the Tube, will be launching on October 2. It could be pure coincidence, but we do happen to know of a Nokia Remix music event happening in Singapore on October 3. Taking into account the time difference, we could be looking at the same announcement. Nokia's keeping mum at the moment, but if anything, we are pinning our hopes on the official release of the Tube. About time.

T-Mobile to throttle G1 speed after 1GB a month?

Tom Krazit  |  Sep 24, 2008
T-Mobile is warning G1 customers that they could get placed into the slow lane if they use more than 1GB of data in a billing cycle.

Engadget spotted the fine print underneath T-Mobile's G1 page on its Web site trumpeting the arrival of the first phone to run Google's Android software. "If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB, your data throughput for the remainder of that cycle may be reduced to 50 kbps or less," the company warned.

iPhone-friendly gloves

Juniper Foo  |  Sep 23, 2008
More accessories for the iPhone crowd, this one taking a rather unusual direction--gloves! Ok, maybe not just any mitts, but ones with small touchscreen-sensitive dots that you can choose for one to three fingers. That way, you won't have to bare your fingers to get some traction on your iPhone in the biting cold. The makers claim the metal dots are smooth and curved enough to offer scratchless use.

Along the way, you can also give your iPhone screen a few quick TLC swipes with the DOTS Gloves (US$13-20) to keep it all smudge- and fingerprint-free. Hmmm... wonder if they're any good for Shiatsu pressure point massages…

Google's Android: It's not just for phones

Stephen Shankland  |  Sep 23, 2008
The first phone using Google's Android operating system will debut Tuesday, a model from T-Mobile, and more are set come. But some Android partners say the software will use more broadly than just phones.

"We're starting to see Android get designed in on devices that extend way beyond the phone--things that might go in the automobile or things that might go in the home," said John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer at Wind River Systems, a Google ally that helps phone makers build and customize Android for their phone hardware.

It's not clear yet whether Google shares this broader Android ambition--the emphasis today is for mobile phones--but extending into new areas could increase both the prominence and competitive threat of the project. However, projects that spread wider also can be stretched thinner, and advantages such as broader developer interest could be offset by incompatibilities other drawbacks.

Bruggeman declined to share specifics about which Internet-connected devices might employ the operating system, but he did mention TVs and set-top boxes as well as cars. And he was confident some will arrive next year.

How much for a Google Android phone?

Marguerite Reardon  |  Sep 23, 2008
The soon-to-be announced, first-ever Google Android phone will be priced at US$200 with a two-year contract, according to a blog post on TechCrunch.

The tech blog said an "insider" had confirmed the US$200 price tag, which is reasonable considering that AT&T is selling the iPhone 3G for the subsidized price of US$199. That said, it's still about US$50 more than what we had expected. Earlier reports were that the phone would cost US$150 with a two-year contract and US$399 without a contract.

The HTC Dream will be the first phone that uses Google's open-source operating system called Android. T-Mobile USA will be the first carrier to the offer the new phone, which is expected to be announced on Tuesday. Stay tuned for more rumors and details as the countdown to Android continues.

T-Mobile declined to comment.
