iPhone iSpy? Hacker says device captures it all

Elinor Mills  |  Sep 12, 2008
The iPhone is recording everything users see and do on their devices for caching purposes, an iPhone hacker says.

The device records screenshots of a user's most recent action so that it can achieve that cool effect of applications fading away when the home button is clicked, according to Jonathan Zdziarski, who wrote the forthcoming book iPhone Forensics: Recovering Evidence, Personal Data, and Corporate Assets.

The screenshots are presumably deleted after the application is closed, but they can be recovered with forensics techniques just like data deleted from most any storage device can be reconstructed for purposes of law enforcement, he said in a Webcast on Thursday in which he demonstrated how to break into password-protected iPhones.

"There's no way to prevent it," Zdziarski said of the screenshot caching, according to a Wired report. "I'm kind of divided on it. I hope Apple fixes it because it's a significant privacy leak, but at the same time it's been useful for investigating criminals."

RIM announces "lifestyle" apps for BlackBerry

Marguerite Reardon   |  Sep 12, 2008
In what looks like an attempt to compete toe-to-toe with Apple's iPhone, Research in Motion announced a slew of new integrated application deals on Thursday to make its email-optimized smart phone more appealing to consumers.

Email was the killer application that catapulted RIM's BlackBerry device into near cult status in the corporate world. And now the company is trying to win the hearts and minds of consumers, not only with new phones--like the flip-style Pearl 8220, which was announced on Wednesday, or the BlackBerry Bold, which recently launched in the North American market--but it's also loading BlackBerry devices with what its co-CEO Jim Balsillie called "lifestyle" applications.

On Thursday, here at the CTIA fall 2008 trade show, the company made a series of announcements about different applications it's customized for BlackBerry devices.

Inside Microsoft's new mobile browser

Ina Fried  |  Sep 12, 2008
Microsoft still isn't quite ready to release its new mobile browser, but I did get an advance look at Internet Explorer 6 for Windows Mobile at a Microsoft event Wednesday night.

The current version of mobile Internet Explorer, seen here, leaves a lot to be desired. A new version, based on the same rendering engine as Internet Explorer 6 for the PC, promises Flash support and other improvements. (Credit: Microsoft)

The biggest benefit will be the fact that it is the full IE 6 rendering engine, meaning that any page that renders properly in IE 6 on the PC should do just fine on Windows Mobile. Tim McDonough, a senior director in Microsoft's Windows Mobile unit, showed me the browser running the standard MSN home page.

The current version of mobile Internet Explorer, seen here, leaves a lot to be desired. A new version, based on the same rendering engine as Internet Explorer 6 for the PC, promises Flash support and other improvements.

I saw the browser running on Windows Mobile Standard--meaning on a non-touchscreen device. The browser makes good use of a D-pad controller to go from link to link, but it's still not as elegant as on a touchscreen. I'll be interested to see how the browser works on a touch-based Windows Mobile device, but am still not expecting navigation to be up to the iPhone level.

Navigation may be better on the iPhone, but IE 6 will have some advantages, such as full Flash support.

Is this the new HTC Touch HD?

John Chan  |  Sep 11, 2008

A few spy shots appeared on forum site Modaco showing what seems to be the next HTC Touch device dubbed the Touch HD. According to the source, this new handheld has a huge WVGA (800 x 480) screen which looks to be as big as, or possibly larger than, the iPhone's 3.5-inch display. Given that such a high-resolution display will be found on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, it's unsurprising that HTC should have one soon.

The leaked details suggest that the Touch HD is a similar size to the iPhone 3G and will have the same specifications as the Touch Pro. The rumored device is even supposed to have a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack, which is great news for those who use their handhelds as music players. No official information regarding this product is currently available, so just be content with the following pictures for now.

Treo Pro Asia-Pacific price announced

John Chan  |  Sep 10, 2008

Palm's latest Windows Mobile PDA-phone, the Treo Pro, will go on sale tomorrow in Singapore at S$938 (US$667.62). Those interested will be able to purchase it from retail shops or from operators.

While we have information only for Singapore right now, its price and availability date should not differ much in your country if you are in the Asia-Pacific region. Check with your local distributor or Palm office for details. We will be putting up a full review soon. In the meantime, get our hands-on with this handheld.
