If Batman had an iPhone he'd want this

Josh Lowensohn  |  Aug 27, 2008
Bruce Wayne has more than enough money to throw down on an official Apple iPhone dock, but citizens like us might be looking for a cheaper solution.

(Credit: Josh Lowensohn/CNET Networks)

London-based designer Courenay Inchbald of Seskimo has come up with one that not only costs less than a gallon of gas (US$4), but also manages to fit in your wallet too. Called the BatRest, it's a piece of cut plastic that folds up like a picture frame to cradle your shiny new toy phone.

Owners of the previous-generation iPhone can pick up the far more masculine-sounding BullRest, which has slightly different shaped prongs on the end that keep the rounder, less-tapered phone from flying off of airline seatback tables and desks.

Two sliders from HTC

John Chan  |  Aug 26, 2008

Taiwan-based manufacturer HTC has announced the price and availability of the HTC Touch Pro in Asia. It will cost S$1,248 and start selling early September. The price and exact date of availability may vary in your country, so check with a local distributor for details.

The Touch Pro is HTC's latest flagship product and will appeal to those using the TyTN II. It comes with all the features you find on the Touch Diamond including a VGA display, the TouchFLO 3D interface, and all the connectivity options you'd expect in a high-end HSDPA handheld. Additionally, it includes a slide-out keyboard and a whopping 288MB of RAM. We have done a First Looks video of the device, so check that out.

While many of us may have already heard of the Touch Pro from its Europe launch some time back, the HTC S740 (pictured here) may not be so familiar. This 3.5G device is a follow-up to the S730 smart phone and, like that model, comes with a numeric keypad under the screen plus a slide-out QWERTY keypad. Though it's a non-touchscreen device, you can see the company has taken some design cues from its Touch line of products. We spent some time with this smart phone--click here for detailed specifications and our first impressions of the mobile. The S740 will be available later in the year at a yet undisclosed price.

BlackBerry Bold comes to Asia and we're impressed

John Chan  |  Aug 26, 2008

At a press event in Singapore today, RIM announced its latest 3G BlackBerry device, the Bold for the island-state. This is not its first appearance in Asia as the Bold has already been announced in markets like Hong Kong and Australia. The company expects the Bold to be available in Singapore from late September. As with all BlackBerry devices, price and exact availability are determined by the operators, so check with your provider for more details on that.

We managed to get a few days with the device before today's event and experienced first-hand why they decided to name it "Bold".

ScanLife 2D Barcode reader comes to iPhone

Dong Ngo  |  Aug 26, 2008

Facebook's EZcode.

Scanbuy has announced its free Scanlife barcode reader for iPhone called ScanLife. The software allows for scanning an EZcode using the iPhone's camera then instantaneously execute an individual action that the code is associated to, such as launching a website without you having to remember its URL and type it on the phone's browser.

ScanLife saves you from having to remember and type in the URL for a Web page.

I tried ScanLife on my new iPhone 3G to launch a few Web sites and it worked very well most of the time, even when the code is not on the center of the photo. A few times when the photo was blurry or underexposed, I had to take it again.

The software works with only EZcodes, which you can create your own, for free, after a quick registration. You can even create an EZcode for a specific Web page, for example, to send users directly to an iTunes page to preview and purchase a specific song or to watch a particular video on YouTube.

ScanLife is available for other smart phones, too. You can get it by texting the word "SCAN" to 43588 to receive the download instructions or go to www.getscanlife.com on your mobile browser. ScanLife supports hundreds of other camera cell phones running major mobile operating systems including BREW, Java, Symbian, Palm, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile.

This seems a fun and convenient way to access and process information from your phones, especially when the implementation of EZCodes becomes popular.

There's a catch though: Your memory will atrophy and soon enough you won't be able to do anything without your phone. This has already happened to me.
