SanDisk intros Mobile Ultra memory cards at CommunicAsia

Reuben Lee  |  Jun 17, 2008
Memory card maker SanDisk launches what it claims is the industry's first premium mobile phone storage cards at the CommunicAsia tradeshow. Labeled under the company's Mobile Ultra lineup, the new memory cards will offer improved transfer speeds when used in compatible devices. According to a representative at the SanDisk booth, the Mobile Ultra media transfers data at up to 20MB/s, more than four times the 5MB/s attainable with the current SanDisk Mobile flash cards.

The new Mobile Ultra memory cards will be available for the microSD/SDHC and Memory Stick Micro (M2) formats at 2GB, 4GB and 8GB storage capacities. They will be priced between S$30 (US$21.38) and S$95 (US$67.69) for the microSD/SDHC cards, and S$46 (US$32.78) and S$139 (US$99.04) for the M2 media. Like the SanDisk Mobile memory card series, the new Mobile Ultra media are bundled with a USB reader. The Mobile Ultra cards also come with a 10-year limited warranty.

LG Secret debuts in Asia

John Chan  |  Jun 17, 2008

We knew about the LG Secret KF750 since a couple of months back when the company first launched it in Europe. Today, LG has officially announced this handset for Asia at a press conference held at CommunicAsia.

As reported earlier, this model features a tempered glass screen and carbon-fiber finish for the back cover. Though it has a slide-out numeric keypad, the thickness is kept low at just 11.8mm. Some of the KF750's features include a 5-megapixel camera, touchscreen display and HSDPA connectivity up to 3.6Mbps. Also built into this device is a motion sensor. This feature is currently used to orientate the phone display and also for the bundled games.

The Secret will go on sale in Singapore on June 21 and elsewhere throughout Asia Pacific around the same time. It will retail at S$838 without operator subsidies. Check with your local telco or retailer for more country-specific details.

Yahoo Go! hits 3.0

Darius Chang  |  Jun 17, 2008

Since the attempted buyout by Microsoft, many have questioned if Yahoo is still relevant in today's tech scene. After all, with Google dominating the Internet search and social-networking Web sites gaining a huge following, Yahoo's track record so far has been less than stellar.

Yahoo Go! 3.0 was announced today and forms the foundation of the Sunnyvale company's renewed focus on its mobile strategy. For those who have never tried the application, Yahoo Go! is essentially a single program which sits on almost any mobile phone and allows you to access your mail and messenger accounts along with other news services.

Now in its third iteration, Yahoo Go! user can look forward to the new MTV Asia widget which provides the latest in music videos. Yahoo oneSearch is now voice-enabled for search strings, as long as you have a BlackBerry (Pearl, Curve or 8800 series) and reside in India or Singapore.

Finally, a new SMS email service will be launched in India. This application polls email data and sends it to your mobile phone as an SMS. It also allows you to reply via the same method without having to search for a PC.

You can download your localized versions of Yahoo Go! 3.0 here.

With more than 68,000 visitors expected, CommunicAsia along with BroadcastAsia and its associated conferences are big events for the region. Singapore's Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts, Dr Lee Boon Yang officially opened the show this morning after his welcome address.

There have already been a number of announcements prior to the opening, including Samsung's official unveiling of the Omnia SGH-i900 and Nokia's new E-series smart phones. For now, check out our photo gallery of the opening ceremony and some shots from the show floor.

Samsung comes clean... with green cell phones

Bonnie Cha  |  Jun 17, 2008
Samsung recently showed its greener side as it unveiled two new, environmentally-friendly cell phones at the World IT Show in Seoul, Korea. The Samsung W510 is the company's first mobile to be made of "bio-plastic", which is produced with natural material extracted from corn. In addition, the W510 uses a water-soluble coating and no heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, were used in the production of the cell phone.

The second handset, the Samsung F268, is made from the same material but it, as well as its accessories, also has the benefit of not containing any BFRs (brominated flame retardants) or PVC. The F268 is compliant with the Energy Star requirements (energy-efficiency guidelines set by US Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy) and comes equipped with an alarm to alert you when the battery is full and encourages you to unplug the charger afterwards.

While the W510 will ship in Korea and the F268 in China come June, it's not clear whether both or either of the cell phones will be sold in the US or elsewhere. The good news is that Samsung is making a global effort to lessen its impact on the environment by launching more environmentally-conscious products with more renewable material and less energy consumption and setting up a cell phone recycling program. Samsung isn't alone in this crusade, as Nokia has been very active in this field.
