MTV is continuing to push its brand onto gadgets, though it seems to be more interested in Europe than anywhere else. A couple of weeks ago its logo showed up in an X-ray on a "multi-room box" distributed by UK-based Sky TV, and now it's coming out with a branded mobile phone in France.
The red 3G slider, from handset designer ModeLabs, has a 2.2-inch display, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and, of course, an MP3 player, according to Pocket-lint. Aside from the obvious logo, it offers exclusive access to MTV content, as well as such extras as games, wallpaper, and ring tones.
We have to say that we're more than a bit disappointed, however. ModeLabs has some amazing designs for phones in concept form for some time, yet we keep seeing products like this latest yawner and the Hummer handset. On the other hand, we're relieved that it doesn't bear any resemblance to the HP laptop that won a design contest MTV sponsored.
Whether they have an aversion to fingerprint smudges or touch screens in general, apparently some people want a stylus for their iPhone. But heaven forbid it should be one of those crude pointy plastic things, poking the royal handset in undignified ways.
That's why the "Soft-Touch Stylus" was created, to be practical but also properly respectful. It's made of an aluminum body with a rubber tip and promises not to scratch or otherwise damage the iPhone, iPod touch, or presumably any other screen as long as it's not abused, according to Pocket-lint. And it comes with a built-in shirt clip, so you can maintain that all-important uber-geek image.
We're tempted to give these to a couple we know but, frankly, their marriage probably won't last anyway and we don't want to expedite the process. But if you know of pending nuptials involving cell phone addicts with a good sense of humor (if that's possible), this might be impossible to resist.
These figurines seen on GeekSugar are made of hand-painted porcelain, which makes us worried that someone might actually use them atop their wedding cake. If that's indeed the case--and you're trying to send a message to one of them--you can even mix and match one of the phone-aholics with another that's sporting a perpetual frown.
Bluetooth is about to get a touch of green. CSR has given its first public demonstration of a headset powered by technology that uses only a tenth of the energy consumed by its standard counterparts.
The technology, previously known as "Wibree,"
was developed and licensed by Nokia a few years ago and is finally preparing to
come to market. Developed for short distances--from handset to ear, for
instance--the system transfers data much faster than standard Bluetooth
connections and therefore uses less energy.
CSR's version of the "ultra-low-power" Bluetooth system was shown at a medical
conference in Luxembourg yesterday, according to SlashPhone. How low, you
ask? The company claims that that devices can run up to 10 years on one button
cell battery. By then, of course, we'll either have broken or lost the headset
anyway.
Are you unhappy with your mobile operator, but unwilling to change because you don't want to change your phone number?
