Ah yes, Facebook, the social community Web site that some cannot survive a day without, while others can't wait to see it go down in history as yet another failed Web 2.0 attempt. It's anything but going away for now. And if the huge database of applications (some utter crap) isn't enough to impress, Mobispine is here to add to your joy, or headache, or both. The mobile media browser allows you to share news with your friends via traditional SMS method or publish it as a feed on your Facebook account from the convenience of your mobile phone. Of course, data traffic charges still apply, and if you already have tons of apps on your Facebook, what's another? More info here.

We first reported on Office Mobile 2007 in June, the same time Microsoft announced the Japanese version of Windows Mobile 6 (WM6). The company revealed then that this new version of Office Mobile will be available in Q3 2007--but looking at today's date, it has not happened.
Last week, a pre-release version was mistakenly put up for download from the Microsoft site. This has since been taken down. The reason cited was that the file was meant for internal testing and not for public consumption. The upgrade is widely reported as being Office Mobile 6.1, but Microsoft has informed us that it should rightly be referred to by its originally announced name, Office Mobile 2007.
Some of the key points about this upgrade are:
The software giant has not confirmed exactly when this upgrade will be available, though the official word is it will be "soon". We'll bring you more information about that when it happens.
And that's a steal, if you ask us. Coming on the back of models like Vertu Diamond (US$88,000) and Vertu Signature Cobra (US$310,000), the Ascent Ti collection by Nokia's luxury unit is cheap at S$9,800. So ok, maybe there aren't as many precious stones as you'd like. But at least you get some spare change left over.
The latest incarnation of its Ascent series, the Ascent Ti features premium materials including a Titanium chassis, cow-hide leather back, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal face and polished ceramic. For the price, you also get a choice of three colors (black, red and brown). The Ti is expected to retail in Singapore from October.
It's not all flash, fortunately. One of the unique features in the Ascent Ti is the Vertu Fortress technology. This synchronizes important data on the phone such as contact details, calendar and notes to a remote server, (supposedly) maintained in an ex-military bunker at a secure location in the English countryside. So if you do lose your very expensive phone, at least the data can be quickly restored in a new handset, providing some peace of mind; other than expending another S$9,800 for a replacement.
The Ascent Ti will come with support for 3G and quadband GSM networks. It will also be equipped with a 3-megapixel camera, in addition to the standard concierge button that provides 24-hour service worldwide (concierge, a dozen Krispy Kremes right this minute, please!). According to the company's press release, the composer behind many of the James Bond movie soundtracks, David Arnold, has created three bespoke ringtones for the Ascent Ti, complemented by a series of car-themed backgrounds.

Samsung is not new to the Windows Mobile PDA-phone business. The company has a few products in that category, though till now, there has been no sustained effort to establish itself in this space. We know the company has had some success with the i320N, and after that the i600 smart phones. So there seems to be no reason why that can't be extended to the handhelds arena.
This may be the one that gets Samsung noticed--the SGH-i780. We first reported on its initial sighting during the GITEX tradeshow, a QWERTY-enabled touchscreen model with a mouse cursor. Samsung has since released the official image and it shows a device that's not unlike the i600 in design, though instead of a rectangular display, it has a square one.
The cheabol has yet to officially release this model and so has not release official specifications. From the knowledge harvested around the Internet, we know it will probably come with a 320 x 320-pixel display, HSDPA, GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera. It's supposed to be just 13.3mm in depth, which makes it extremely thin for a touchscreen handheld. More information will be available in the coming month--we'll bring you those as we receive them.
