Apple iPhone's Asia availability in '08 stays

Damian Koh  |  Apr 18, 2007

This probably won't affect us Asian folks and it's still anyone guess when the iPhone will be available in the US. We know in June, but when?

Editors' note:
18 April 2007--According to a Reuters report, the iPhone is on schedule to be available in the US by the end of June and AT&T's wireless unit has an exclusive US deal to sell the highly anticipated handset.

According to CNET News.com's Tom Krazit, the main reason the Cupertino company's latest version of Mac OS X is scheduled for a later release in October was because it had to pull engineers from the Leopard development and have them work on the iPhone instead. In a statement on the Apple Web site, the "iPhone contains the most sophiscated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price--we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team".

Apple also said the "iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned". According to CNET Crave, FCC certification documents for the iPhone still haven't surfaced online. The moment it does is probably when we'll have more news on a launch date.

Does that mean we still have to wait until 2008 before we can get the iPhone. Yeah, probably so.

Dell working on PDA-phone?

John Chan  |  Apr 18, 2007

Hot on the heels of Dell's announcement about the end of its Axim line of handhelds now comes rumor from DigiTimes that the US manufacturer is working on a new PDA handset with Taiwan-based hardware manufacturer Quanta.

According to the buzz, this new device will come with Windows Mobile 6 Professional, HSDPA and perhaps a QWERTY keyboard. It is expected to be available in Q4 2007 and will be codenamed "Fly".

It's not surprising that such a rumor would arise, as the handheld market is dominated by those with phone features, and the popularity of dedicated PDAs like the Dell Axim is declining. DigiTimes also correctly notes that Ron Garriques, former head of Motorola's cell phone division, is now in charge of Dell's consumer business.

Quanta is a Taiwanese company which produces products like notebooks and handhelds for other brands. Some of its customers include HP and O2.

When contacted, Dell did not confirm or deny the rumor, stating that they do not comment on products that may or may not be introduced.

Nokia 6120 classic: HSDPA candy bar

Damian Koh  |  Apr 17, 2007

Following the E90 Communicator, N95 and 6110 Navigator, Nokia has today announced the 6120 classic to beef up its HSDPA lineup.

Slated to be available in Singapore by August, the 6120 classic is your typical candy-bar phone with a simple yet classic design-- something which Nokia excels in. Powered by the robust Series 60 platform, the quadband 6120 classic also comes with Bluetooth stereo, a microSD card slot and a 2-megapixel camera at the rear.

So far, the technical specifications don't look too exciting, but for those who've been waiting for a slim Nokia HSDPA handheld, this could be it. We're still waiting for local pricing details but our friends in Europe can expect to fork out about 260 euros (before subsidies and taxes) for this candy-bar when it arrives.

Nokia 8800 Sirocco levels up with Gold

Damian Koh  |  Apr 16, 2007

We all know that exclusivity comes at a price. What better way to illustrate it than with an 18-carat gold plating on the new Sirocco.
The price we're talking about here is S$1,888 (US$1,353.89). We could think of a million and one ways to spend that kind of money, but for those to whom a Vertu is out of reach, the Sirocco Gold looks like an equally flashy handset without the excessive sticker shock.

Expect the unit to be in stores by this week. For that price, you also get a matching desk stand and Bluetooth headset. On the specifications front, the Sirocco Gold edition is similar to its triband predecessor made from high-quality stainless steel, complete with a 2-megapixel camera at the rear.

Dopod C730 (HTC Cavalier) shipping in May

Damian Koh  |  Apr 16, 2007

The Dopod C720W was one handheld with a sleek design, good performance and a robust set of features. Its successor, the C730, brings to the plate more goodies.

One of the first Dopod handhelds to run on the Windows Mobile 6 Standard edition, the C730 is powered by a 400MHz processor with 64MB RAM and 128MB ROM. The quadband (850/900/1,800/1,900MHz) phone comes with 3G, HSDPA, a 2-megapixel CMOS camera and an external memory card slot that supports microSD media up to 2GB.

Unlike the C720W with a two-toned silver and black design, the new C730 in one single shade of classic gray. There's also a strip of touch-sensitive controls for the volume, return and email functions on the side of the unit.

Editors' note:
17 April 2007--According to Dopod International (Singapore), availability of the C730 in Australia and Hong Kong is still pending confirmation. We'll update again once we have more information.

The Dopod C730 is expected to be available in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and The Philippines from May.
