HP's iPaq 510 to debut in April

Reuben Lee  |  Feb 15, 2007

The company plans to bring its latest handheld running the new Windows Mobile 6 OS to Asia in April. Announced recently at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, the iPaq 510 Voice Messenger is one of the first smart phones to sport the updated Microsoft mobile operating system and possibly the first non-touchscreen handset we've seen from HP.

Price information was not available for the iPaq 510 at press time. However, based on the US retail given, it should cost around US$299. The iPaq will come equipped with a 2-inch display, quadband GSM support, 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD card slot, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Samsung unveils new Ultra Smart F700

Reuben Lee  |  Feb 08, 2007

With the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona happening in less than a week, Samsung is clearly looking to get an early start on things with the recent announcement of its Ultra Smart F700 mobile phone.

The F700 is the first Ultra phone to feature a full touchscreen display with slide-out keypad that's very much similar to QWERTY-enabled PDA-phones such as the Dopod 838 Pro and O2 Xda Zinc. It is also equipped with an integrated music and video player, High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), Bluetooth and VibeTonz technology. Its onboard 5-megapixel sensor makes it the highest-resolution camera-phone we've seen so far from the Samsung Ultra series.

Handsets in the Ultra series have traditionally been known for their superslim form factors. The F700 is no exception with its 16.4mm girth which makes it one of the slimmest touchscreen phones with slide-out QWERTY keypads.

We'll be keeping a close watch on the F700, which is expected to be showcased at 3GSM.

Windows Mobile 6 versus RIM and Nokia E-series

Reuben Lee  |  Feb 08, 2007

To better illustrate some of the enhanced features of its latest Windows Mobile OS, Microsoft has released several screenshots comparing the new platform to RIM's BlackBerry and Nokia's Symbian Series 60.

From the pictures, one of the most noticeable improvements on the Windows Mobile 6 OS is the full HTML email support, which now allows images to be viewed in the email. Users will also find that the company has enhanced its Mobile Office applications for viewing and editing documents, bringing the user experience closer to that of the desktop version.

Like its Windows Mobile 5.0 predecessor, the new mobile operating system will be available in three platforms: Windows Mobile Professional (for PDA-phones), Windows Mobile Standard (for smart phones) and Windows Mobile Classic (for non-cellular PDAs).

Handheld devices based on the new Windows Mobile 6 operating system are expected only in the middle of the year, though the bulk of them are slated for the second half of 2007. We are expecting some of the first products to be announced at 3GSM next week.

Read our news coverage of Windows Mobile 6 here.

Samsung Ultra Messaging i600, available in March

Damian Koh  |  Feb 07, 2007

Hot on the heels of the SGH-i320N, Samsung is rolling out its second smart phone with full QWERTY keyboard, this time with 3G, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity features.

Editors' note:
If you're wondering whether Samsung plans to phase out the earlier SGH-i320N, well, the answer is no, at least for now. In an aside with CNET Asia, Ng Long Shyang, the Sales and Marketing director for Telecoms and IT Products in Samsung Asia, says the i600 and i320N will be sold side-by-side, with the latter targeted at first-time smart phone users. The company also has no word of the i600 running on the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.0 which is expected to be launched this year.

First announced at ITU Telecom World 2006 in Hong Kong last December, the Ultra Messaging i600 is targeted at mobile executives who are users of multimedia, too. The handheld runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone edition, so you won't get the Office Mobile Suite or document-editing capabilities. Instead, the phone is bundled with Piscel Viewer which allows you to read Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files.

The i600 also supports MS Direct Push for synchronization with Microsoft Outlook. Unlike the SGH-i320N, the i600 comes with a larger 2.3-inch screen and higher-capacity 1,200mAh battery. Other multimedia goodies include a 1.3-megapixel camera on the rear, a VGA sensor for video telephony, A2DP (Bluetooth Stereo Music Profile) support and PictBridge for mobile printing. Check out our review of a pre-production unit here.

The Ultra Messaging i600 will be available in Singapore from early March at a recommended retail price of S$898 (US$590.79), or S$798 (US$525) with a two-year mobile contract. Australia and Philippine users can also expect the phone to be available in their countries in the same time frame.

Sony Ericsson's slimmest Walkman phone yet

Reuben Lee  |  Feb 07, 2007

Thin handsets are in. At least that's the impression we got from Sony Ericsson when the company recently announced its latest Cyber-shot and Walkman phones. Of particularly interest is the W880i, the company's thinnest Walkman cellular to date.

Measuring a mere 9.4mm thick, the W880i may not be as slim as the Samsung Ultra Editions, but it is nonetheless a good first attempt by the Japanese-Swedish handset maker to finally jump onto the thin-phone bandwagon.

Teaser images of the W880i were first released at the CES tradeshow in January, but it was only at the recent Singapore launch that Sony Ericsson offered a full glimpse of the phone.

During the brief hands-on session at the media event, we were rather impressed by the W880i's sleek styling, smooth metallic finish and solid build quality. Despite the slim form factor, the phone sports a good range of features which include a 2-megapixel camera, 1.8-inch QVGA display, Memory Stick Micro card slot and 3G connectivity. Expect a full review to follow soon.
