Philips Emotions Jacket lets audiences feel what actors emote

Juniper Foo  |  Oct 20, 2009

Is there such a thing as too much realism in our movies? If frights could kill, Stephen King horror flick Carrie did just that when it claimed its victim of terror at a Singapore screening. Then there was that little episode during the action thriller The Negotiator when someone in the audience had an epileptic fit, most likely brought on by the show. Fortunately, a doctor was on hand to help. So it won't be too much of a surprise that Philips' Emotions Jacket could fall under the same warning as smoking. That is, this could be hazardous to your health. Wear at your own risk.

Analog watch with 24 time zones

John Chan  |  Oct 19, 2009

I'm one of those persons who don't wear a watch, depending instead on my mobile phone for time. The good thing about doing that is if you set your phone's time to follow the operator's, you never have to adjust the time when traveling across different time zones. Those who like their analog watches, though, can opt for one of these TX Airport Lounge timepieces. According the product description, it displays the time and season for 24 locations at the push of a button.

Starting from US$490, the TX Airport Lounge is reasonably priced for a watch. Sure, you can get a Casio digital which shows as many time zones for under US$100, but you lose points for style doing that. As for me, I'll stick with my mobile phone.

Portal Shirt lets you simulate teleportation

Damian Koh  |  Oct 12, 2009

Like huh? Unlike the Wi-Fi Detector and Dynamic Life t-shirts which are moderately useful, the Interactive Portal Shirt simply doesn't seem viable. Mounted in front of the apparel is a wireless 5.28GHz pinhole camera and TFT LCD display. The shooter projects what you see to the person wearing the other shirt by displaying it on the wearer's screen and vice versa, creating an imaginary portal between the two people. It's completely useless if you buy only one shirt since the "portal" requires a pair to work, which, by the way, will empty US$200 from your wallet.

A suit that protects you from H1N1?

Dong Ngo  |  Oct 08, 2009

The new anti-H1N1 suit doesn't just make you look dapper, it supposedly also helps keep you disease-free. (Credit: Haruyama Trading)

If the new swine flu vaccine doesn't give you the right dose of inner peace, there's another layer of protection at your disposal. It comes from Japan, which means it looks good, too.

According to the UK Telegraph, Japanese menswear company Haruyama Trading has developed a suit that it claims can protect wearers from the H1N1 virus.

The suit is coated with titanium dioxide--a chemical commonly used in toothpaste and cosmetics--that breaks down when reacting with light and supposedly kills the virus upon contact. (If you read Japanese, here is the company's press release.)

Despite the new layer of protection, the suit seems pretty much like other suits commonly worn by Japanese white-collar workers. Each suit costs about US$580, about how much a decent suit at Men's Wearhouse costs. The suits go on sale Thursday and in four colors and styles, including medium gray, charcoal, navy, and a gray pinstripe. The company says the suit will retain its protective capability even after being washed multiple times.

LugeCubes: Stackable cubes of ice that chill your drinks

Joshua Goldman  |  Sep 23, 2009

(Credit: Quirky)

LugeCubes are water molds for creating stackable cubes of ice 8 inches wide by 8 inch high by 8 inches deep. When stacked together, a channel in the ice created by the molds allows you to pour whiskey vodka Jager fruit punch through the ice and out a removable and reusable spout. The mere thought of this product makes my stomach hurt.

It's being sold through Quirky. Well, sort of being sold. You see, Quirky, a site that launched in June, takes products that spring from the minds of its community and drives them from idea to sales, all the while letting the community vote, rate, and influence the product ideas through the entire process. Before a product gets produced, though, it has to hit a presale threshold, which in the case of the LugeCubes is 300.

A majority of the products up for sale or presale on Quirky are tech-related, like the Split Stick, the DigiDude, and the Watt Time.
