Outlet Wall solves all your power needs

Matt Hickey  |  Jun 28, 2009

The Outlet Wall is a great idea. It actually looks good and is totally an exercise in function meeting fashion. If I ever get around to remodeling my place I do believe one wall will feature this setup.

It's just what it appears to be: An entire wall made of active power outlets. Imagine: No more power strips, tangled cables, or trying to make brick adapters fit where they don't want to.

Even if you don't wire all the outlets up, they still look cool. It's almost some sort of post-tech artistic statement.

Photographer David Friedman came up with this concept and posted it on his site, Ironic Sans, where he often details design and gadget ideas. Sadly, the wall does appear to be just a concept for now, but David, if you're reading this, I'd like to give you an Internet high-five.

What do Transformer's Michael Bay and Steve Jobs have in common?

Greg Sandoval  |  Jun 23, 2009

Here's a shot of Michael Bay on Guardian's Film Weekly Podcast. (Credit: The Guardian)

Courtesy of Michael Bay, director of such percussive films as Bad Boys, The Rock, and Transformers, comes the latest reminder to read over emails before hitting send.

Apparently Bay was disappointed with the way his latest film, Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen, was being marketed, so he sent a nasty note to Paramount Pictures bosses. Someone leaked the email to gossip hub TMZ and Bay's image has now taken some dings.

First, for a maker of macho-man movies, Bay sounds a tad whiny. Then, there's the problem with the way he writes. One critic at New York magazine called Bay's note "grammatically horrifying." Shades of Steve Jobs, known for abandoning grammar in his keynotes?

Steve Jobs underwent a liver transplant surgery

Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave from Apple for the past six months, received a liver transplant in Tennessee two months ago, according to a report Friday in The Wall Street Journal that did not cite sources.

Earlier this year, Apple's CEO was reported to be relocating from California to Tennessee, which has a shorter waiting list for patients seeking organs, the report noted. In January, after Jobs announced that he would step aside from his day-to-day duties for a six-month medical leave of absence, Bloomberg reported that Apple's CEO was considering a liver transplant. In a telephone interview at the time, Jobs refused to comment on his health status.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but an Apple representative told the Journal that Jobs "continues to look forward to returning at the end of June, and there's nothing further to say".

Jobs is expected to return to the helm of Apple this month after nearly six months of medical leave. Jobs announced in January that he would be stepping down temporarily from the chief executive post while recuperating from a hormone imbalance. Some hoped his return to the company would coincide with an appearance at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month to announce the new iPhone 3G S, but that did not pan out for the Apple faithful.

Jobs, 54, has been the subject of heated speculation regarding his health since last June's Worldwide Developers Conference, when he appeared to have lost a great deal of weight. At the time, Apple insisted that Jobs' health was a private matter but revealed in early January that Jobs was suffering from a hormone imbalance that was impeding his body's ability to absorb certain proteins.

In August 2004, Jobs underwent successful surgery to treat a rare form of pancreatic cancer, which sidelined him until September of that year. Much of the speculation over the past year had been over whether that cancer had returned.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, has been running the company during Jobs' absence.

Life-sized Gundam spotted in Tokyo

What's even cooler than a full-size Gundam towering over Tokyo? A full-size Gundam towering over Tokyo at sunset, its light and mist emitting 59ft (17.9m) frame shadowed by a stunning sky.

We first mentioned this mecha monument last week. Bandai built it in Tokyo's Odaiba Shiokaze park to mark the 30th anniversary of the highly successful Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, which kicked off as a Japanese television series and went on to spawn numerous spinoffs, including movies, novels, comics, and video game adventures.

The giant RX-78 Gundam replica with the movable head will officially be unveiled on July 11 and will continue to stare Tokyo down through the end of the summer.

The Standard and Deluxe versions of the Daddy Wine Puzzle

The Daddy Wine Puzzle is too good to pass up, especially if your Dad loves his tipple. You get extra brownie points if the man loves a little challenge. User reviews on the Web site vary, with one forumer claiming that his brother-in-law solved the puzzle under 5 minutes, while another took 4 hours.

The Daddy Wine Puzzle comes in two versions, Standard and Deluxe, depending on your dear old pop's tolerance level for a challenge. Both will fit any bottle with a 3.3cm diameter neck. Of course, you don't want to turn this gift into a nightmare for Dad, so before he gives up, pass him the cheat codes.

The Daddy Wine Puzzle retails at US$41 (Standard) and US$49 (Deluxe) with a bottle of red wine bundled. The best part is, the puzzle is recyclable and can be used to entrap other bottles. You know you are getting your money's worth this Father's Day.
