Wrap-Around-the-Corner picture frame gives photos a new dimension

Leonard Goh  |  May 29, 2009

What's around the corner? (Credit: Photojojo)

This is no digital picture display but the Wrap-Around-the-Corner photo frame from Photojojo is so innovative that we asked ourselves: "Why didn't we think of it earlier?"

The Wrap-Around-the-Corner photo frame fits comfortably at almost any corner of the house and it consists of 12 separate panels which can hold seven to 12 photographs of various sizes. For a picture to wrap around the corner, you'll need to splice it in half and fit it into the adjacent slots. While that may sound like a hassle, we think this makes for an interesting montage of your works.

The retail price of US$99 for the Wrap-Around-the-Corner is a bit deterring but if you have the dough to spare, this picture frame can spruce up what seems to be a boring corner of your room. As Photojojo's Web site states: "Happy memories are just around the corner."

A chair right at home in Terminator Salvation

Juniper Foo  |  May 27, 2009

Home is where the bum is. (Credit: Eduardo McIntosh)

Yikes. If this is the future of armchair living, gimme a Fatboy Hammock anytime. Designer Eduardo McIntosh's post-apocalyptic vision of of an Autonomous Living Unit looks like a hot seat custom-made for the dystopian future of John Connor (Christian Bale). According to McIntosh, this proposes a way of putting all the functions of a home into a single chair, and is intended to be installed in derelict buildings and deserted housing projects. Though why he reckons a recliner comprising a sinister tangle of speakers, wires, tubes and dangling light bulbs could serve the basic needs of 21st century man remains a mystery. But since this was designed as "a somewhat satirical project", if you didn't get, well, you got it.

Visual effects shoot for realism in explosive Terminator Salvation

Spoiler alert: This article describes some of the action sequences in the new Terminator movie. If you don't want to know details about some scenes, bookmark this article and come back to read it after you've seen the movie.

In Terminator Salvation, visual effects and computer graphics played a big part in making many of the action sequences look realistic. This is a mototerminator, a key evil robot in the film, and one that required the visual effects team at ILM to work hard on making an exploding car do what they wanted. What do you do if you're a filmmaker trying to capture a scene in which an onrushing tow truck slams into a parked car, sending the car rolling neatly up and over the truck's back, but you face the reality that the car, vaulted into the air by a cannon shot from below, actually flies high above the truck?

Meat Cards' meaty proposal

Juniper Foo  |  May 25, 2009

Beef up your business with these edible name cards. (Credit: Meat Cards)

Moo-ve aside, Lego. Here's a business card proposal you can really sink your teeth into. Meat Cards are 100 percent beef jerky (flavor: "Original"), with contact details that are seared onto the slice with a 150 watt CO2 laser. But here's the beef: You'll have to vacuum pack your business cards and their lifespan may be a lot shorter than you think once your recipients start to get hungry.

The company isn't selling this yet, but you can check out how two show comperes rated it for taste after the jump.

Letting your insoles speak to your phone

Mats Lewan  |  May 25, 2009
It's becoming increasingly difficult to hide from your results while playing sports. The latest self-revealing tool is coming from startup eSoles.

The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company says its customized insole will enable your mobile phone to register data such as cadence, power output, balance, speed, and distance while you are cycling, skiing, walking, running, golfing, or jumping rope.
The input comes from 11 pressure sensors integrated into the insole; the data is transmitted to your mobile phone via Bluetooth.

The solution is slightly more advanced than products such as the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, which is based on one accelerometer attached to the shoe that gives information on time, distance, calories burned, and pace.

A prototype version of the wireless insole has been tested by athletes and will be available this summer. But most people will have to wait until the second half of 2010, when eSoles expects to have a commercial product ready.

The cost of this little self-spying device is not yet well-defined by the company, which indicates possible models from a basic US$49 to a presumably luxury version at US$499.

Users will also need a smartphone. Initially, phones with Windows Mobile will be supported; applications for the iPhone and BlackBerry are expected to be developed later.

The wireless insoles will be tailor-made using eSoles' Foot Imaging Kiosk System. The systems consists of self-service kiosks for the sports retail market that contain 3D foot-imaging technology and of modular insole components.

In the kiosk, customers' feet are analyzed and measured. The output is translated into instructions that enable a retailer to build insoles from modular components to fit the customer' feet and their specific footwear.

There are limits when it comes to beauty, though. On its Web site, eSoles points out: "We do not have a footbed solution for high-heeled shoes yet."
