Music streaming service coming to Xbox 360?

Philip Wong  |  Jul 14, 2009

You can expect more multimedia content coming your way from Xbox Live if Microsoft's new venture materialized soon. The Redmond software giant is on track to debut its music streaming service by end July and has further signaled that this could be tied to the company's game console. The upcoming service will be similar to the Europe-based Spotify portal which offers three types of subscriptions: Free live music streaming with advertisements, ad-free day pass, and a monthly fee for unlimited song playback.

We've sounded out our Microsoft contacts for clarification, but we won't be terribly surprised if the company is sidelining Asia again.

Black or white: Wii now offers a cool black option

Philip Wong  |  Jul 14, 2009

It looks like Darth Vadar has set upon the family-friendly Wii with this menacing-looking black model. This new kit will be "invading" Japan on August 1 and is currently on preorder at online retailers such as Amazon Japan and PlayAsia.com. The makeover ranges from the console to the bundled Wii remote controller and rubber jacket. Other blackened accessories you can pick up include an optional Nunchuk and the company's classic controller pro. Color aside, there seem to be negligible changes to the hardware specifications, as well as the official retail price. No news available outside Japan at the moment.

Is PS3 Slim video showing the real deal?

David Carnoy  |  Jul 14, 2009

Recently, a shaky, grainy video of what may or may not be a PS3 Slim turned up on YouTube (Engadget says it's supposedly a "stolen" PS3 slim that made its way to a street market in the Philippines). However, it's of such poor quality that it's really hard to tell what's what and it looks pretty dubious to us (and other blogs as well).

The "console" in the video does appear to be a little bit smaller than the current PS3 and there's quick flash of the new PS3 logo that we saw in earlier spy shots of an alleged PS3 Slim shipping box.

What do you guys think? Real or fake?

New ultra-bright NEC projection solution

The NEC NPx2xx-series projectors pack all the heavy-duty performance of its NPx1xx-series predecessors plus one key enhancement. These installation-centric entries are endowed with the company's Easy Stacking function which enables up to four beamers to be combined to deliver a staggering 20,000 ANSI lumens brightness.

Initial setup is also greatly simplified via a hassle-free geometric correction software that's downloadable from the projector. This allows users to compensate for any image irregularity from each beamer using just a PC, USB camera and onboard test patterns.

103-inch Bang & Olufsen TV lands in Singapore

Reuben Lee  |  Jul 09, 2009

Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 4-103 (Credit: Bang & Olufsen)

Warning! The Bang & Olufsen (B&O) BeoVision 4-103 is a plasma TV not for the faint-hearted. For one, it has a humongous 103-inch panel, which is probably one of the largest in the market today. (The only competitor we can think of is Panasonic's 103-inch plasma TV.)

For a display this size, B&O recommends a minimum viewing distance of 4.5m for the best visual experience. In a nutshell, you'll need to have a pretty big living room to accommodate a TV like this. As a matter of interest, the TV weighs 250kg, the motorized stand another 250kg, which add up to daunting 500kg for the entire system?

The shocker, however, is really its price. According to the Danish firm, the BeoVision 4-103 will retail for S$230,000 (US$163,946.11) in Singapore. That's a six-figure sum that can easily net you a decent small apartment in many parts of Asia. In Singapore where cars are overpriced, that's the sticker price for a BMW Z4 Roadster.
