The latest Sony WE5-series Bravia TVs have strong eco-friendly features. For starters, this family of HDTVs have the world's first microtubular hot cathode fluorescent lamp backlighting which helps save up to 40 percent of power compared with the 2008 W4500-series Bravia units. The latter uses a cold cathode fluorescent lamp or CCFL found in most, if not all, traditional LCD TVs. In addition, the new panels are also equipped with a unique sensor which can detect the presence of viewers. This can be used to automatically turn on and off the TV temporarily to minimize electricity drawn by the set, especially handy for those who tend to leave their TVs on even when no one's around.

Sony, Samsung and LG have all announced their ultraslim LED TVs for the home consumer market. JVC is eyeing a different market segment with its upcoming GD-32X1. The company has its sights set on the potentially lucrative retail, office and medical space with its 32-incher based on the latest LED-edgelit technology. This gives the monitor (Read: No onboard TV tuner) a sleek 6.4mm-thin side profile at its slimmest section and a high 4,000:1 native contrast ratio to boot. Since the GD-32X1 weighs only 5.7kg, JVC claims that this panel can be installed using a variety of unique methods. These range from hanging off ceilings to moving glass stands, and sliding doors.
Another key feature is the GD-32X1's dedicated 36-bit Genessa Premium video processor that performs motion-compensated noise reduction. JVC did not reveal any regional availability of this full-HD panel, though it'll be launched in Japan from late August this year.
Following the success of the Via Western Digital WD TV, an accessory for USB external hard drives that plays multimedia content stored on the hard drive, LaCie announced recently its LaCinema Classic Bridge.
The main difference between the two is the fact that the WD TV works with only USB external hard drives, when the LaCinema can handle both a 3.5-inch internal hard drive (not included) and an external USB hard drive. This also means the LaCinema is much larger than the WD TV.

Epson is following up on its recent home theater projector launch with yet another new model. This time round, the Japanese company is launching its flagship EH-TW5000 which offers three key additional functions compared with the midrange EH-TW4000. For starters, the EH-TW5000 supports an optional anamorphic lens for ultra-widescreen movies. This removes the usual letterbox (a.k.a. black) bars which take up precious screen space. The end result is a truly cinematic experience.
To set up and calibrate the beamer, the company has equipped the EH-TW5000 with a Color Isolation function and Preset Color mode. The former allows the primary hues to be easily calibrated out-of-the-box, while the latter provides color settings tailored for US and European TV broadcasts as well as the Blu-ray standard. This 100Hz light cannon is now retailing in Singapore for S$6,888 (US$4,891.70). Regional launch details were not available.
